Hate to do this to you but it's been bothering me for a while and MN seems the perfect place to ask my question...

what washing powder do you use? and is it any good? at the risk of sounding like the 'before' person on a tacky ad my biological one is useless at getting anything other than superficial stains out of stuff, especially things like DS' white vest which seem to have a permanent scuzzy mark around the neck.

sorry for being so boring but would love some advice!

ive used surf always have (its cheap and good!) sometimes i use bold the new lavender one cause it smells nice,

I use Fairy non-bio with some oxi-clean stuff for the filthy stuff. Seems to do the trick. Also have Vanish spray for DH's collars/cuffs.

Clayhead · 19/10/2004 18:02

Asda non bio, I love it.

JoolsToo · 19/10/2004 18:02

Nimmee - ditto - I don't like using biological but use the Vanish products for stains.

Not too boring at all These are the little things that matter to the poor devils that have to do the washing that's all!!

We have used non bio persil but have recently changed to Sainsbury's non-bio as it was on offer for half the price. I am really pleased with it and will buy it again!! I'm afraid that for really dirty stuff, if it doesn't come clean I chuck it away as it's mostly kids' clothes that I refuse to spend a fortune on anyway!!

My mum always used to rub vanish into the cuffs and collars of shirts before she put them in the washer, which she swore by - there were 3 men in our family each with a clean shirt every day and footbal/cricket shirts at the weekend. By my maths that makes 21 shirts a week - all without an automatic machine. How did they do it, and more importantly WHY!!?

Lesle · 19/10/2004 18:40

Thanks guys. Sounds like I'll need to start using something like Vanish on the grubbby collars (how can his neck be so dirty - he's 1!). Shame as I wanted to stick to non bio stuff and it means more work but I guess it comes with the territory

I also put some laundry liquid onto collars and cuffs, also under arms sometimes of all dh's business shirts.A handy tip my nanna passed down.

Lesle - the vanish oxi-action or clean (can't remember which) is a powder and you just put one scoop in your wash - it's fab and I put it in with the kids clothes and it doesn't bother them.

NomDePlume · 19/10/2004 19:17

I use Persil non-bio with a scoop of Vanish Oxi Action (stain remover) and Comfort Pure fabric softener.

muddaofsuburbia · 19/10/2004 19:22

Agree with vanish or oxyclean scoopy stuff.
But also check your fluff filter if it's a washer dryer - if that gets bunged up it can really affect your washing quality. Also if you're in a hard water area then use calgon otherwise your powder/liquid doesn't work nearly as effectively and your machine will die off prematurely! Finally, use the heavy soil (or equivalent) option on your machine. It'll use way more electricity, but should make a difference in your wash.

We're using ASda brand tablets at the mo - non-bio for ds and bio for me and dh.

Lesle · 19/10/2004 21:18

Blimey! How can I have been washing clothes for so long and know so little!! Didn't even know my w/d had a fluff filter (please don't tell me mom she'd be so cross!)

Thanks to all for what sound like top tips. Will certainly give them a try.

Even getting excited about my washing now
