Is anyone else a slave to paperbacks?

I have a kindle but I just can't really get on with it. And I find hardbacks too heavy to read in bed. Am I the only one?

No, not at all. Ebooks see convenient if travelling or in hospital, but there's nothing quite like the feel and readability if a paperback. I enjoy reading and what I'm reading much more.
I fear we are a dying breed though.

MrsMcMuffins · 04/10/2020 07:29

No you are not alone. I don’t get on with kindles at all. I think it’s because it’s a screen and reminds me about work.

Mindymomo · 04/10/2020 07:45

I have read a few books on kindle, but I enjoy reading in the bath and have been known to drop books, so wouldn’t want to drop kindle. I don’t buy hardbacks, because they are expensive and heavy.

You should try a paperlight, the interface is better and more 'book' like and they are waterproof! I love my kindle - best thing ever!

WisestIsShe · 04/10/2020 08:02

I've just been debating this, with the idea of asking for a Kindle for Christmas. I've decided against it. I just can't imagine it being as satisfying but I can't articulate why. I love books.

Merryweather80 · 04/10/2020 08:07

If I use a kindle, I find I need to use it with the screen black with white text to avid the feeling of being in the office- working.

I have invested in a book light to use in bed, so I don't wake my partner.

My children prefer an actual book too.(9 & 6)

MrsRogerLima · 04/10/2020 08:09

Agreed! I cannot get that comfy cost feeling from a hard bit of cold plastic.

My mum loves hers. I wish I could because they are so convenient but I just can't!

Teaandchocolatedigestives · 04/10/2020 08:09

Another one here. I have a Kindle but rarely use it. Love a good old paperback. Completely different experience altogether.

MrsRogerLima · 04/10/2020 08:10

@WisestIsShe you can have mine for a tenner to try it out if you like? 😂

It's been sat in a drawer for the last five or so years.

DillonPanthersTexas · 04/10/2020 08:12

I love the feel of a book but over the years I slowly migrated onto kindle. I travel quite a bit so a kindle is way more practical.

Straven123 · 04/10/2020 08:20

Kindles are handy if you're travelling but should you lose it eg leave it on the plane, it's a much bigger loss than a second hand paperback (which is what I usually buy).

ChessieFL · 04/10/2020 08:29

I love my kindle, but I also love actual books so no way would I give them up completely. I also prefer paperbacks to hardbacks - hardbacks take up too much room and are heavier to hold.

Much as I love my kindle, I do find that I often forget the title/author of what I’m reading (especially as I read a lot of psychological thrillers that all have similar names!). I think it’s because with a paperback you get a reminder of the title etc. every time you pick it up and you don’t get that with the kindle. This means I can never recall if I’ve read something based on title alone if it was a kindle read.

For this reason I tend to keep my kindle for the more forgettable stuff and buy paperbacks for my favourite authors. I also buy more non fiction in physical form particularly if it involves photos as these don’t really work on a kindle.

The kindle is great for travelling though and also for reading in bed at night without disturbing DH.

BeautifulandWilfulandDead · 04/10/2020 16:14

I was very anti-kindle, but got given one as a gift and I'm completely converted. You never lose your place. It has a built-in dictionary. But the best thing about it is you can buy exactly which book you want to read next immediately. Though this does have a negative effect on my bank balance! 😂

Rhubardandcustard · 04/10/2020 16:20

I got bought a kindle as a present 5 years ago and have hardly used it. I like picking up a book, just isn’t the same on a screen.

randomsabreuse · 04/10/2020 16:22

I love my Kindle (especially the app on my phone) because it is always there if I've got a few minutes (early on school run) and if in hospital I can just get the next book - never the risk of being without a book to read!

I'm currently enjoying trashy YA fiction on Kindle unlimited, which I'd be embarrassed to be seen reading in public.

Also prefer kindle for anything "big". The big Peter F Hamilton paperbacks are unwieldy and totally impossible for 1 handed reading (breastfeeding, unwell child asleep on lap or stupid canular in one hand type situations.

I still love actual books but am sadly migrating most of mine over to Kindle versions because we don't have enough space in the house!

zafferana · 04/10/2020 16:28

Yes, I'm a paperback addict. I too have a Kindle (a really old, b&w one), and it's useful for holidays, but I love real books. I love the smell of them, the feel of them, the look of them on my shelves. I had my entire study shelved out when we bought our own house so I could house them all!

Ginisatonic · 04/10/2020 16:31

This year I decided to do the 50 book challenge. I wanted to make a real effort to get used to my kindle and I’m on book 49 now. I much prefer my kindle for reading in bed because I can use it without disturbing H. I also love that I can buy a book instantly anytime I choose.
Like @ChessieFL I do tend to forget the title and author of books I’m reading which is the biggest downside.
Can’t remember the last paperback I bought. Means my bedroom is much tidier these days.

WisestIsShe · 04/10/2020 20:27

@MrsRogerLima That sounds like a great offer! If you're serious pm me .

AyraKirkpatrick · 22/10/2020 17:42

Same here! I just don't get ebooks.
