What do I do with a freezer full of food while moving?

We're moving in 2 weeks time and we have a fridge and freezer full of food and meat. We've got a man with a van coming to collect all our appliances so the fridge will need to stand for 24 hours before plugging it in (I think??). What should I do with all our food in the meantime? (Really do not want to have to throw it all away ) 😩

Start eating so it's not so full

I second just trying to eat it all (embrace randomness) then seeing if you have a friend who will let you stash the remainder in their freezer for the day?

Eat it all or give it away

I've never in my life left a fridge or freezer to 'stand'. Tape the door shut on the freezer, put what's left of the fridge stuff in a coolbag leave it as close to last as you can, transport them standing up and get them out and plugged in as soon as you get to the new house. so

MrsRogerLima · 24/09/2020 21:08

Don't know what the random so is about, sorry lol

Freezer tapas for a couple of weeks...

How far are you moving? When I moved (admittedly a very short journey). I ran down the contents of the freezers and fridge.Fridge contents went into a cooler and the freezer was moved and plugged in immediately. Freezer still working fine 10 years later

Another option is to use a polystyrene thermo insulation chest (dunno where has best quality/price, quick google showed lots) pack it at the very last minute, even wrap a quilt round that too for extra security. Most vulnerable stuff in the middle, frozen peas and the like round the edges. We got held up in our last move, food was in polystyrene trunk for about 4hours, the outer layers were just starting to sweat a bit but nothing was defrosted.
Whatever strategy u go with - good luck!!

These day, you don't need to leave freezers to stand, the refrigerant is not the same any more. Make sure to tape the door shut. It can be the last thing on the van & first off to ensure minimum down time. in any case, according to the leccy board, it's good for 12 hours if you don't open the door (water board chopped through the main cable, wife was overly concerned about the freezer, guy from the leccy board said it would be fine if we kept the door shut.

Newly delivered fridge said it only needed to stand for an hour or two. I can't recall exactly So you could pack it all in a box well lined with a bin liner and packed with ice, that would easily last many hours.

Eat as much as you can.
