Hiya , any recomendations for a sling for a big mum?? got my eye on a baby bjorn as the front can come of and also baby can be fed with sling on. I have a wilkinet which served me well.. from ds1(9) thru ds 2 and 3 but with this baby i'm all for short cuts and altho i love the way the wilkinet craddles baby and the strings length is fab for my size, unying and tying when out will be a hastle with the other kiddies with me.

Hello,

I've got an Ergo which I love (after trying just abotu everything else in the world!) and I believe you can get extensions for them...

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 08/10/2007 14:54

Ooh, I'll watch this trhead for replies as a fellow chunky mum! I have a freedom ring sling, but to be honest it doesn't work brilliantly with my body! Would love a sling I could feed in comfortably.

Hope you get some good responses.

bohemianbint · 08/10/2007 14:55

this is what I'm on about

ib · 08/10/2007 14:56

I HATE the baby bjorn. It gives me instant backache.

champs · 08/10/2007 16:31

JATGB - youd think bigger women dont have kids wouldnt you?!! I know i should just stop eating treats (ie, its my own fault) but still!!

bohemianbint, ergo looks very bulky, does it still "mold" to your body like others?

ib, is it the style that makes your back ache? have you tried any others hat dont hurt your back?

Funky Slings will make a sling to your measurements

RGPargy · 08/10/2007 16:46

JATGB - i'm going to be buying one of those freedom ring slings. Why do you feel it doesn't work for you and can i ask what size you are please?

RG (a fellow chunkster)

omeN666 · 08/10/2007 16:49

jatgb i HAD A freedom ring sling and never had any problems..was a size 26/28 and pg with dd2 and have HUGEEEEEEEEE knockers. There is a lady called cheaper by the dozen on ebay[she actually has 12 kids] who makes the freedom sling a bit bigger.

bohemianbint · 08/10/2007 18:43

Ergo not bulky at all. Have you got a sling meet near you so you could try a few out?

piximon · 08/10/2007 19:59

I'll be watching this thread too. I have a ring sling which I loved with DD1 but for some reason just could not get comfy in or settle either of my twins in this year. Also have another carrier (harness type, can't remember off the top of my head what it was) bought from Mothercare which I have never felt comfortable in, Dh has used it without problems (he's long and thin, I'm the opposite). Desperate to find something suitable for next arrival as thought of triple buggy is too much to bear!

ib · 08/10/2007 21:13

With the baby bjorn the weight seems to be carried between the shoulder blades, which really hurts me.

I also have an ergo, which is ultra comfy for me, but now ds is older he doesn't want to be on my back, so I've ordered a hip panda which seems to be a bit like the ergo on the hip setting but less of a faff to put on. I only really used the ergo from around four months, as I didn't find the newborn thing much good. Great for bf from about 4 months, though.

When ds was little we mostly used a ring sling. I also have one of those you wrap around which was comfortable but found it a bit of a palaver to put on.

How old is your baby?

champs · 08/10/2007 22:56

thanks all!!

vole3, thanks for that. not too sure about that one altho the materials are scrummy!!
altho it looks like it would be fab for b/feeding.

bohemianbint, not sure if there's a meet near me. is there a link that shows areas please... not really heard of a sling meet, i'm sure someone there may want to try out my wilkinet.

piximon, dont want a tripple either ds2 is 4 bu still rides at the back of the p&t as he's quite small and gets tired. He loves to walk tho so i'm guessing i'll be ok with a sling and double and then ds2 will walk and dc4 will go into buggy, ds3 will go in toddler chair.

ib, baby is due in 3weeks so will be newborn when using the sling.

Hi, I am a size 22/24 and bought a custom made ring sling from ebay but it really didn't suit my body shape - it felt like the rings were digging in to my neck and the baby kind of sits straddling your hips, but with the size of my hips dd's legs were almost doing the splits!

The sling I used from birth right through till toddler age was the kari-me:
www.kari-me.com/ - it's a lovely big bit of soft stretchy material and it fits all shapes and sizes. Is perfect for a newborn - my little 5 weeks premature dd went in it from birth.

Hope you find something you like.

ib · 09/10/2007 10:29

Not sure about the ergo for the newborn but it's great for older kids - I can carry my 3yo nephew in it without any strain (the weight is all carried on your hips, so the back doesn't feel it).

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 09/10/2007 10:30

how big are we talking?

i was a size 22 when i had dd3. the moby wrap sling was fine for me.

champs · 09/10/2007 17:10

Jenkeywoo the karime looks fantastic!! thanks! I'll have a read.

ib thanks

LadyVictoriaOfCake will have a look at the moby.
