Best electric toothbrush?

We have a fairly standard Braun/OralB job which cost about £30 5 yrs ago. It seems to be losing its buzz and so I want to get a new one. There are so many on the market now it's all a bit confusing. Has anyone got one of these Sonicare ones, and if so, can you tell me if they;re worth the extra money? What do they actually do that is so great?

I have a Braun Oral B that cost me a tenner its rechargeable and does the job. I use Tepe's instead of floss - job done! like my teeth?

I've had two ... a Braun one and a Colgate one (comparable price). The Braun was far far far better and I'm regretting buying the Colgate one...

What are 'Tepe's '?

I haven't tried any of the other brushes so I have nothing to compare it to, but I have a Sonicare and it is fab. Since I've had it, I've not needed any dental treatment. They do leave your teeth and mouth feeling really clean. I've had the actual unit bit for about 4 years and you need to replace the brush bits quite regularly, but I'm sure that's the same with all of them.

bunnyrabbit - Tepes are tiny little brushes (various sizes) that you push between each of your teeth - it's MUCH better and easier than flossing - I get them from my dentist but I think Tesco do them - I suppose they're a bit pricey at about £3 for 8(?) but I make one last all week

We have a braun oral b job but it also has a water floss machine attached. We got it about 2 years ago and is fab.

I've got a sonicare. It was about £75 so not cheap and the extra brushes are about £15 each but I've had it for nearly 2 years and haven't had to have any treatment in that time and my dentist says my teeth and gums are much better. So I reckon it was well worth it.

DelGirl · 18/10/2004 18:19

oh and I use the tepes too.

lulupop · 18/10/2004 21:20

OK so next question is: where is the cheapest place to get this sonicare thing?

Here's a quote from a recent Which? report, if that's any help.
"A recent review of scientific evidence concluded that brushes with oscillating heads were the only electric brushes to remove plaque and reduce gum disease more effectively than manual versions. These brushes use round heads that quickly turn back and forth to help scrub away plaque.
"Some of the more expensive models also feature a pulsing action, though our dental experts thought this would have little effect on their cleaning ability. The brush heads usually have bristles of slightly different lengths and textures to enable them to enter gaps between the teeth more effectively. Rechargeable brushes can be better than battery-operated ones, as there's no danger of performance waning as the batteries wear down. But battery brushes tend to be smaller, lighter and better for travel. The best rechargeable counter-oscillating brush is the Braun Oral-B Professional Care 7000 but, at £44 from Argos or online at £45 from www.boots.com, it's quite expensive. The cheaper Braun Oral-B Advance Power 900, £18 from Argos or £22 from www.argos.co.uk, has fewer features but cleans just as well.
"If you fancy a battery-powered brush, we recommend another from the same range - the Braun Oral-B Advance Power 450 TX battery brush, £13.50 from Argos. It's handy for travel, and a cheap way to see whether you like electric brushes.

"Our experts were sceptical about sonic brushes but users liked them. If you're prepared to splash out £100 in pursuit of a cleaner mouth, try the Philips Sonicare Elite 7000, the best sonic brush on test. It's £99 in Argos or £80 from www.amazon.co.uk."

Also recommend the sonicare- dentistsaid it was by far the best. Cheapest place is Costco if you've got one near you.

lulupop · 19/10/2004 08:15

thank you 80smum, that's v useful! and tamum, we have a costco about half an hour away, but I can never face Lakeside with 2 kids so don't go often! Maybe I;ll drop in and do Ikea at the same time
