9-month-old not walking yet - what do I do about shoes?

Want to buy him something to keep his little toes warm and thought I might as well buy him boots he can walk in as it doesn't look like it'll be too long before he's on his feet. Any reason not to?

I'm sure you are supposed to keep them out of proper, hard shoes for as long as possible aren't you? In Clarks you can get soft shoes for when they are just crawling and then cruiser ones for when they are starting to walk, holding on to furniture.

Otherwise, you could just get those leather slipper-type things that you can get in John Lewis or JoJo Maman etc.

Are you serious? A 9 month old or do you mean 19 month old????? There's other threads so won't bore you too much but I have a SIL and BIL who owned and ran a children's shoe shop for 30 years or so and they are vehemently opposed to Bobux or any type of shoe until a child is walking reasonably consistently and then they must be fitted propertly, not trainers bought off the shelf for example. As I've said before, this is not my opinion but the advice I've had from people I believe know what they're talking about.

I've just got DS (nearly 11 months) some soft shoes as DH is concerned his feet get a bit cold going to nursery in the morning.

He isn't walking yet and I don't think he will be before he's a year, although he has been cruising for about 6 weeks or so, so it may be a little while until your DS is walking!

PicadillyCircus · 17/10/2004 12:19

And also it's likely his feet will grow really quickly so anything you do get now probably won't fit him when he is walking.

suzywong · 17/10/2004 12:21

Yes there is a reason not to buy walking shoes

The shape of the foot, particularly the instep changes a great deal in the first 4 weeks after they truly begin to walk so if you bought something now you would be restricting the natural and necessary growth of his feet.

Bobux with a good pair of thick socks are great as are good old fashioned hand knitted bootees.

Honestly keep him out of shoes for as long as possible and he'll thank you for it in later life

(I just put mine in proper shoes 6 weeks after he started walking and he only has them on half an hour a day for a couple of weeks until he gets used to them and until his feet really develop in to load bearing walking feet)

suzywong · 17/10/2004 12:22

well there you go then not even bobux, you can get those socks, toasties or something, with non slip grippy soles if you are worried about him slipping over.

Really don't do the shoes yet.

We use socks and little soft padders for ds2 to keep his feet warm! Don't see why soft unrestricting shoes shouldn't be ok. There's no way I'd take ds2 (9mths) out in the cold with nothing on his feet to at least attempt to keep them warm. Having said that though, he does pull them off and suck the socks (lovely!), so sometimes I wonder if there's any point in trying to keep his tootsies warm!! No proper shoes though until he's been walking for several weeks!

Aero · 17/10/2004 12:25

By soft unrestricting, I mean padder type things.

Delovely · 17/10/2004 12:35

OK OK Davros, keep your hair on! I'll try to find those other threads

My ds2 is almost 11 months and he isn't walking yet. He stands up and walks holding your hands but doesn't do the cruising. I wouldn't entertain the idea of shoes for some time. Instead when we go out, he's in an all in one suit which has built in booties. In the house he has very soft slippers with the none slip grip on the bottom. I think I got them from Tesco.

lou33 · 17/10/2004 12:44

Ds2's physio says no shoes at all preferably until they have been walking for a couple of months. Even socks can cause problems in her opinion, but barefooted children isn't always possible obviously.

PicadillyCircus · 17/10/2004 12:49

Flip, when's your DS2's birthday (as mine is nearly 11 months as well!) Mine's birthday is 22nd November

My ds2's birthday is 27th November.

Sorry about double posting (and also hijacking your thread, Delovely)

PicadillyCircus · 17/10/2004 12:53

Thanks - I like thinking of there being other babies almost exactly the same age as DS (who doesn't do walking with someone holding his hands but does cruise. I have the feeling he is going to be Mr Independent)

lou33 · 17/10/2004 12:56

ds1 is 27th november as well flip . Mine will be 6 though.

Flip · 17/10/2004 12:57

Ds2 crawls none stop and he's like lightening. He's getting to adventerous and I put up a baby gate yesterday. On Wednesday while hanging out the washing, he decided he'd join me outside and went head first down the step and cracked his head on the flagged patio. The first bump of many I'm sure. A big vote here for Arnica. I'd never be without it. After he'd finished holding his breath I noticed a huge bump on his head and cheek, it's almost gone now thanks to Arnica.

Flip · 17/10/2004 12:58

It seems odd him being nearly a year old. He's still my little baby and I don't want him to grow up. I'll have to start planning number three although dh says no way. But accidents happen, right?

PicadillyCircus · 17/10/2004 13:07

Think I should get some arnica as well as DS keeps bumping himself (and has done nearly the same thing as Flip's DS but I stopped him at the last minute). He did bang his head at nursery and they called me (heart thumping time) but he didn't even cry. Presume he has a hard head or something like that
