Audi Q5 or Q7

Help. My husband’s work have given him a choice of an Audi Q5 or Q7. This would be our family car, that I would drive during the week. We would have to have it for 4 years. We have 2 DC who are 4 months and 3 and a half. We are undecided on whether our family will grow further. I also have a mother who cannot drive so we do ferry her around at times. Any opinions on these two cars? Concerned the Q5 will be on the small side as we go away a lot, but literally terrified of parking the q7!!!

PS - please no suggestions of other car brands, I know Audi isn’t everyone’s favourite but it’s what we can have! I just want honest reviews and thoughts xx

I’ve had a Q7 and it’s not a problem to actually park, with sensors/reversing camera it doesn’t make much difference....however, they do stick out the front or back of parking spaces though, and I would avoid tight multi stories as once parked it’s hard to open the doors. The 7 seats are really handy and have been regularly used. Maybe go to the Audi showroom and see a Q5 and Q7 side by side.

The Q5 isn't actually that big inside compared to
It's outside .. I'd go q7 if you need space .

I was in the same predicament and wanted to decide on cars before going to showrooms (can’t bear them) I watched lots of YouTube videos to decide between the options and the q5 just looked too small which was confirmed in person and The q7 was too big for me when I went to see it. I don’t have kids but do require ample boot space, q5 has that bet I felt abit closed in. I did actually think the Q7 would be ideal for my brother, busy family and lots of space! I’ve put the video I watched below may help you!

I went from a golf to a 4 x 4 and honestly I’m so used to it I think I’d find it odd parking a smaller car, as previous poster said with the cameras and sensors it really does help. Not going to lie when I first got it I did park in the furthest possible points so I could get used to it with no cars around 🙈

Definitely the Q7. With small children I would take all of the space I could and they are much easier to park then you might think.

The Q5 will be too small but the Q7 is a tank and doesn't fit in parking spaces properly. You can forget parking in a multistory and taking the baby seat out with the baby in it. We had one and I used to crawl in the boot and unclip the seat and drag it and the baby back out of the boot. Good times!

Given my time again I'd take the Volkswagen or Mercedes van with the power sliding doors. But you have to be emotionally ready for the van!

Q7 definitely xx

I hated the Q7 with a vengeance! Sorry.

Far bigger on the outside than the inside IYKWIM - huge, bloated car with a normal amount of space inside.
I have 4 boys and a large dog, so size is a consideration and I was never going to have a small car, but the Q7 was awful IMO (I know a lot of people like it).

It is easy enough to park, as PP said sensors/camera make light work of it, but HUGE. Multi-story car parks and some 'normal' parking bays simply don't accommodate it.
I had a Volvo XC90 before and had less trouble getting that parked, even though its turning circle was worse.

I like Audi, I think the build quality is great. Would you/could you consider one of their estates? The A6 Avant is lovely (and what I would have if I could afford it under current circumstances).

Pacif1cDogwood · 31/08/2020 00:23

Oh, and it is also really thirsty. Hmm

I have had both. I think it comes down to how much boot space you need. I loved my Q5 but upgraded to the Q7 when 4th child came along. And now I love the Q7!

As you have two kids currently, having a Q7 would give you an enormous boot (not having to use the rear seats). It is wider than the Q5 on the outside, so more tricky to fit widthways in parking spaces without getting blocked in. And it does hang out a bit lengthways but that doesn't really cause issues. Our local multistorey has wider than normal spaces for people with kids, so that is fine.

Actually parking it is fine. The reversing camera and parking sensors make that v easy.

You could consider the Q5 and use a roof box for holidays etc? But if you think you will have a third child AND need to transport your Mum (i.e. 6 of you) then it has to be the Q7. Like I say, no regrets here Smile

Not the same but I've recently gone from a BMW 1 series to a Volvo XC90. I had the parking fear too but within a week had mastered it.

dietcokeandchill · 31/08/2020 10:23

Thank you - you are all so helpful! I think my husband might murder me if I dont decide today! Err ing towards the Q7. In an ideal world I would have a mini!

I've had both.

The Q5 was my favourite. It was big enough, but not huge.

In the Q7 I found that I would park, but when it came to trying to get the baby out of the car seat, there wasn't enough room to open the door and reach in. It also cost £300 a month to fill up as I did lots of small journeys.
