Anyone had a fake tan done at a salon?
blossomhill · 16/10/2004 22:44
As it's my birthday next week and I am very pasty at the moment I am seriously thinking of having a spray tan done.
Anyone had one done? I am so worried that I am going to look orange.
As I am going out Saturday would you have it done Thursday to 1) see how it goes and 2) allow it to settle
Thanks
BH

I remember Spacemonkey had a spray tan and she said she went orange (mostly her hands and feet). There was lots of banter on MN about "you've been Tango-d" and Oompa Loompas

I've had one done. Actually, I've had more than one! Last time was before my cousin's wedding in April.
Advice is to exfoliate and moisturise like mad the night before you go, paying special attention to ankles, knees, wrists, elbows - anywhere the skin is likely to be extra dry. In the salon they should give you instructions on how to apply a barrier cream (supplied by them) to your feet and hands. You'll especially need to use it correctly on palms and fingernail, toenail area as that is another area where skin can be dry so spray can settle and discolor. That's where the orange can figure in.
I wouldn't worry about being orange in general though, as the colour is quite natural. Just ensure that you pay special attention to those dry skin areas already described above. And, it goes without saying that you go in with NO makeup or jewelry on. Let us know how you get on - if you decide to do it!

no blossomhill go for it!
my last pregnancy i put on loads of weight and i had a posh wedding to go to not long after i had given birth. felt really unattractive and self consiece (cant spell). went to local salon and had a spray tan called fantasy tan.
the day before the wedding i went to the salon and put on the paper knickers and got the tan. next day woke up with gorgeous golden tan, felt brilliant!
included in the price was a visit to the salon where the girl checked for patchy bits and corrected them (i had none) i also asked her to put more on my face cos it was a bit pale
thoroughly recommended for special occasion lasted a week
(god - please dont curse me if it goes wrong for you)
have a great birthday xxx

I got it done about 6 weeks ago. Like you feeling pasty. It was nice, except for my feet and inbetween my fingers. I didn't put enough of the barrier cream on my feet and it looked very fake. I couldn't wear sandals for about 3 days after and was scrubbing away round the the bit where the top of your foor meets the sole, and also just around my toenails.
If I was getting it again, I'd probably do it on the Wednesday to give it time to settle. It was there instantly but developed further overnight. No mess or anything on my bed and was £20.
Hope that helps.

I had it done for my wedding a few weeks ago and I felt like a million dollars. I had it done on thursday evening and by saturday it looked really good. you do look totally tangoed straight after cos of the guide colour they use, this washes off. the worst part is that it disappears after a few days and you are left feeling like you crawled out from under a stone.

I haven't had a spray one done but regularly during the summer have a Clarins or a Guinot one put on at a salon.
They do all the exfoliation and moisturising. I love it make me feel good and as I am a natural very pale celtic complexion makes me look healthy.
Tips:
have it done 3 days before the event
try and get last appointment of the day at the salon so you only have to go home looking orange
wear very lose clothing, easier in summer than winter
think about the shoes
don't wear a bra afterwards
don't thake baths..soaks the tan off (shower)
and I personally don't like St Tropez

I've done St Tropez in the past (at a salon). OK for an occasion, but really only looks good for a day or two. And there were still orange bits. Would agree with all of Eve's tips, though being an F cup, not wearing a bra is not an option - I do choose a black one though.
Afraid that I'm now back on sunbeds...
blossomhill · 17/10/2004 20:37
Dilemma - shall I have one or not. I'd rather be pale than orange and patchy. I hate sunbeds too! I do have some bronzing gel I could use....
Earlybird · 17/10/2004 20:46
If you're only going to do it the once, I'd pass up the spray tan (no time to learn from your mistakes), and do a treatment where an aesthetician applies cream/gel/whatever for you. Completely agree with whoever said that you need to do it on a day/time where you can go dirctly home after the treatment, and not go out until the next morning. You don't want to be wandering the streets looking as if you fell into a mud puddle.....which is how you'll look until you shower if you go with St. Tropez.

OK here is my story
first time i was sprayed absolutely no difference in skin colour at all
returned acouple of days later as was stold engineer had been to look at tanning booth. again no diff in skin colour
returned third time, engineer had been again, new solution blah-de-blah
OMG machine sprays you for 15 seconds and you have to keep eyes shut. when i opened them OMG. BIG splodges on tummy and both legs, upper and lower.
shouted of woman who was rather shocked but tried unsuccessfully to reassure me it would be fine. she did try to remove the blotches but couldn't. they were green!!!
came home, face looked like i'd been motorbike srambling on a rainy day. wiped it off but didn't wash.
the next day my 'tan' had developed. i had a fantastic real looking tan on my face, chest and arms. BUT had white tummy with big orange stain, white legs with orange stains. orange heels and ankles. the orange stains looked like i'd been paintballing naked.
luckily it was n't stripping off weather, and wet, so could wear my trainers for a week
i was so lucky that the splodges weren't on my face or arms.
if it had been done by a person and not a machine then she would have been able to see what was happening.
go very carefully BH
blossomhill · 17/10/2004 23:15
The more I hear the less I want to go through with it. I cannot be past white next Saturday and I hate sunbeds. What a dilemma!
lou33 · 17/10/2004 23:22
Spacemonkey did indeed go orange and patchy , and said it wasn't worth the money.
blossomhill · 17/10/2004 23:24
Oh where can I get a decent tan from?
Wouldn't it be great if dh has planned a fortnight in the Caribbean for my 30th!!!!
Eve · 20/10/2004 21:23
Go to a clarins salon....I really recommend them and they are all trained to the same level.
Get them to put the palest tan on so you glow rather than look very brown.
