look at fuji finepix - a whole series of them and some not sooo expensive with good results. i found all kinds of stuff at great prices on amazon recently, but dixons let u go and try em all out if that's what u want. don't be fooled by claims of squillions of megapixels, i have a good camera which has 6million and prints stuff up to a3 size which is pretty huge. my DH is a geeky pro photographer and he says more than about 6mil is a con, as they count each pixel twice as there is a big one with a small one within it (??!) and never trust the spotty little geeks in jessops

Look for something with fast shutter lag.
You don't need zillions of megapixels. Even 6meg is unnecessariy unless you are printing posters...you will only use more memory. I have 3meg and its fine...routinely use it at 2meg setting and print 6*4 OK. When I buy again I will buy 4-5meg and no more.

I love fuji finepix as well had mine a few years though so can't advise on model. Mine doesn't take batteries and charges like a mobile which I've found easier than batteries. Screen also big and can pic really clearly.

here are there cameras under £100.

Deffo go for something with a good optica l zoom.

Also remember that the lens is critical even on a digital. Fuji, olympus, Nikon and some Sonys (the ones with Carl Zeiss lenses) are good startning points for lens.

From that list (and purely that list)i would start by looking at the Canon, Nikon or Fujis (I personally didn't like hte Fujis 3yrs ago but don't know what they are like now)

fihi · 02/10/2007 21:38

the (finepix) F20 goes for £105 and has good reviews (just nicked Dgeek's mag) might be worth a look. I use one of last year's models at work, but as fuji churn out new cameras every couple of months you should be able to get a bargain. if feeling brave look at digital camera mag in library, they have good user reviews. Or just ask someone like my DH who reads them all

Amazon.co.uk/electronics

any use?

Sorry - I promise I havn't been drinking but you wouldn't know it from my typing

ooohh just a thought, after mrs h made the fab point of her camera charging like a phone....
if anyone else feels like buying u something, and u end up getting a camera which needs batteries get re-chargeables the initial outlay for a good set of 4xAA batteries, suggest 2600's and charger (usually sold together). it might be £20-25, but worth it in longer term as digi cameras tend to eat alkaline batteries a bit

kitsandbits · 02/10/2007 21:58
