Car almost 3 years old, can you get MOT slightly before 3rd anniversary?

Car was registered on 2nd September (three years ago) and will be due the first MOT on 2nd September.

However Road tax is needed from 1st Sept and it isn’t possible to buy Road tax without the MOT being valid on that date.

Can the first MOT be done a week early? I know subsequent ones can be done around 28 days early but kwik fit said they can’t do the first MOT early??

Thanks for any help.

You can MOT a car whenever you like. Do it at a month old if you fee the need. You can’t get shitter than a Kwik Fit fitter!

And so is Halfords (shit that is). I get my car MOTed in a local council garage (they fix/ service council vans, etc.) - they can only assess cars but not carry out any repairs so you know they won’t lie to you. Hopefully it’s not just one place like this.

I thought it was no earlier than a month before renewal, so you could book it in now.

I thought it was no earlier than a month before renewal, so you could book it in now.

That’s to preserve the renewal date but you can do it any time if you’re not bothered about that. You could MOT a car every day if you really wanted to.

As the car will be less than 3 years old, it should be possible to tax it without an MOT, as the MOT is not required until after the renewal date.

@CruelAndUnusualParenting is there not something about your mot having to be valid for a minimum of one month in order for your car to be taxable on it?

I’m sure I had three days left of my annual mot and the post office wouldn’t let me buy tax (granted this was years ago) citing that I needed at least a month.

So if the OPs car is under a month left of road worthyness I don’t know if the same thing would apply?

Or perhaps I am havering and it’s all changed!

However, as pp have said, you can get your car motd whenever you like. So if you get that on the day prior or two days prior and problem solved job done.

I have never heard of vehicle tax requiring anything more than validity on the day the tax starts. If you are buying the tax in advance then your MOT will need sufficient time remaining to cover the start date. As far as I know, that's all that required.

According to www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax#other-ways-to-apply "You might also need your MOT test certificate (it must be valid when the tax starts)."

Perhaps it’s changed.

It was years ago, but I clearly remember being turned by the post office who said I couldn’t tax my car as either the insurance or the mot (Can’t remember which) was valid for less than a month and me arguing it was valid today so why can’t I thats a stupid rule. Happy times 😂
