I am looking for an alternative to a shower screen or curtain for an over the bath type of shower.I wanted a plain glass floor to ceiling wall but builders said no!Any suggestions? It is a modern bathroom with a grey slate floor, white fittings and chrome taps etc.Bought from fired earth but they have no screen!

spacemonkey · 15/10/2004 13:35

codswallop · 15/10/2004 13:36

i had a curved plain glass shower screen from B&Q, it was very nice, I'm sure you could get a straight one?

we've just had this one (the one in the main picture) fitted - it looks great, but we've not used the shower yet as the plumber is awol, quel surprise.

DP wanted a screen but I didn't - because I knew it would be very hard to keep clean. Our designer/fitter came to the rescue - he fitted a razor thin wire across the room. It looks very stylish and we then put a nice shower curtain on it. It makes bathing toddlers easier too - you can push it right away from the bath over the other side of the room!

Thanks!I have looked at the matki site and that is a possibility. Also like fisil's idea,is it a normal curtain wire or is it especially for bathrooms?Still would love floor to ceiling glass but apparently it's not safe

noddy5, the builders are talking total c**p. I am an architect and specify frameless glass shower screens every day. I have 2 of them in my own house. Is the bathroom done yet, or just in planning stages? Ideally you set the glass in an aluminium channel buried in the floor and wall below the level of the slate. It's really easy. It doesn' t need to go to the ceiling, by the way...just to slightly above the bottom of the shower head. It's important to make sure that they waterproof everything first with something good like the BAL membrane waterproofing system. And when they set the channel for the glass in, use lots and lots of silicone. The glass will have some flex in it, but there's nothing wrong with that...glass is flexible. It is important that the glass is toughened glass. Anyway, if you want a little help, CAT me and I'll try to explain further.

jampot · 16/10/2004 07:20

will ask my sister too (bathroom shop)if she can recommend a manufacturer - we are having a glass screen but only from bath height and I;m pretty sure they are getting a profile from a company called Nordic

Thanks I am going to put the idea to the builders as they haven't started yet.The bath is longer and wider than normal not as deep like a huge shower tray and so a regular screen stuck on the side wouldn't look right.I am really wanting smoked toughened glass and am determined to have that now, they have suggested glass blocks but I don,t like those. Thanks for these details SA

I don't know what normal curtain wire is. It is probably 2mm diameter and attached to the walls with very stylish little tube things.

SofiaAmes · 16/10/2004 13:27

noddy5, don't bother with the smoked glass (I am assuming what you meant was etched or sandblasted). It's really rotten to keep clean..fingerprints show terribly and it catches the limescale. And the reality is that as soon as you turn on the hot water, the glass gets steamed up anyway. So definitely go for clear. The makti ones are good. Or do a search online. Or if you are feeling really adventurous, contact a glass supplier (not just your local store) and buy a panel and the hinges directly from them and save yourself loads of money. I can give you names for london.
