We are thinking about slate or limestone? Which have you got? Any other types? And where did you get it from? We are going to granite worktops and creamy cupboards and our current tasteful cork tiles is not going to look so good!!!!

it is not just the morning .. it is all day .. even in summer (but then its nice)

in winter stone floors can be like ice

seriously consider underfloor heating .. its not that expensive

(I don't have stone floor .. decided against because of the whole underfloor heating and breakages .. but I'd hav eliked indian slate)

we got natural slate, looks fab, nightmare to lay and grout, and the gloss finish looks better than the matt - and def seal it.

we got ours from a place in the midlands - they delivered and it was v reasonable. stone floor tiles uk 01335 361106. i looked everywhere and it was the most reasonable, even paying for delivery etc.

We have just had terracotta laid (grouted today !) - from fired earth who do all types of natural stone. We've had limestone before and its a nightmare to keep clean. I love slate but our kitchen is dark so opted for something a bit lighter.

wheelybug · 01/10/2007 19:51

oh yes, as herts says - it is apparently a nightmare to lay and grout. I have had a VERY moody fitter for the last couple of days who DOES NOT LIKE MY FLOOR (because it is a pain to lay and also because he doesn't like the fact the tiles are not perfectly square and perfectly even.)

We were advised against underfloor heating as we have a victorian house so all the heat would disappear under the floorboards - we've had stone before and really not found it cold but then I love hard floors and always walk around barefoot - ceramic tiles tend to be colder because they don't take absorb any heat.

We are having indian slate in our hall this week. Its five different sizes. So I'll stay out of the tilers way then should I?

beachyhead · 01/10/2007 20:19

We had limestone tiles put down ...but they are not limestone, but ceramic from Worlds End Tiles. No way you would know the difference and no trouble to clean etc. Limestone without the attitude!

uptomyeyes · 01/10/2007 20:21

We had a fired earth stone floor laid in our old kitchen - it looked lovely when it was laid but it was a bugger to keep clean, showed every speck of dust and the trailed their cats wet paws across it every day.

It never felt cold though.

Clearly the nighttime crowd is the place for flooring advice....

I cannot decide if slate floor, white cupbaords and dark worktops would look odd, but equally I know light coloured floor pain to clean.

Cazzy - I don't think it would. Thats originally the sort of combination we were going for until we chose the units and they were a bit more creamy so ended up going for light solid wood tops and terracotta floor. Our kitchen is very dark so it was the right decision for us I think but I think your combination would work too.

My builder is smiling again this morning and has just told me how nice the floor looks .
