Childrens clothes - American sizes??

CookieMonster · 13/10/2004 19:20

I wonder if there are any American mumsnetters around who could help me?
I've bought a pinafore dress from Ebay - it's by OshKosh and the seller advertised it as age 4. Now, I have other OshKosh dresses for age 4 and this pinafore is really small in comparison, in fact it's just way too short for my dd and will cut her under the arms with a jumper underneath.
The label in the dress says 'Styled in USA' and says it's a size 6 ... what should that convert to in British sizes?

size 6 is six years old. All places would be like over here - depends on the store if things come up 'big' or 'small'.

CookieMonster · 13/10/2004 19:37

Thanks for the response hana.
All I can say is it must be made for a 6 year old of extremely restricted growth ... think I'll email the seller and see what size she reckons it's supposed to be.

Is this any help?

lou33 · 13/10/2004 19:44

Also found this on an american in uk site:

Kid's Clothing Sizing Chart
UK kid's clothing sizes are very similar to US sizes. They are often more closely matched with the age of the child so if the clothes are sized to fit a 6 month old they really will - not a 3 month old as they might in the States.

CookieMonster · 13/10/2004 19:47

lou, yes I found that site as well - didn't really help as the dress is just a 6. According to your second post then, American sizes are not terribly accurate?

Don't seem to be

zebra · 13/10/2004 19:57

All my US kids clothes match the UK sizes perfectly, if I take it that "4T" is size 3-4yo, "3T" is size 2-3yo, etc. but these are unbranded clothes... I wouldn't be surprised if Osh Kosh has their own rules.

JanH · 13/10/2004 20:11

I was going to mention that T, zebra. There are T sizes and equivalent non-T sizes, I think the T sizes are wider and shorter or something - it stands for toddler?

So you get baby/crawler clothes sized in months (and those sized dungarees always have poppers up the legs); toddler clothes sized in years but with a T; and then kids' clothes sized just in years. But I do seem to remember that we found US sizes came out smaller than their equivalent UK sizes.

Have been looking for a comparison chart but they're not much help.

LunarSea · 13/10/2004 20:57

I've always assumed that the T mean "to" - as in 3T is up to 3 (about a 2 and a half) - sort of in between the sizes of 2 and 3, and it's always worked out ok. Having said that Osh Kosh do sometimes seem to be funny with their sizes - I've got a pair of age 1 trousers which only now fit ds at 3, and had another pair (which I gave away here) which were 9-12 months, but still wouldn't fit ds now. But then again their dungarees always seemed to be a size smaller than the labesl would have suggested.

Hulababy · 13/10/2004 21:03

We have always found the American Osh Kosh clothes to be shorter and wider than the UK Osh Kosh clothes. TBH we have found that with many American styled clothes. My (just) 2.5yo is average sized for her age, but does not fit into an age 2-3 american sized clothes - they are just way too short.

I believed the T to stand for toddler.

CookieMonster · 13/10/2004 21:10

Right, just found the OshKosh B'Gosh website complete with size chart - apparently a size 6 is for a child of height 45-46.5 inches which sounds about right to me for a 6 year old. There is no way this dress is for a 6 year old - it's either labelled completely wrongly or it's a fake OshKosh (dh's opinion).
Either way I'm going to try and get a refund from the Ebay seller.
Thanks for your input ladies!

Or - if it's cotton - it could have shrunk?

Good luck with your refund - I bought a pair of trousers this summer by quoted label ("M & S age 12 height 60") which turned out to have had 4" chooped off the bottom. Sellers said "well you should have asked".

JanH · 13/10/2004 21:13

Or even chopped.

love oshkosh stuff - but v expensive over here....boots have started selling it online

KateandtheGirls · 14/10/2004 12:15

The T does stand for toddler, and I'm not sure officially how it's supposed to work, but I have always had success with treating a 3T as 2-3 years etc. My 2.5 year old is wearing 3T now.

On the other hand there is a wide variety between brands, and I have found OshKosh clothes to be on the small size.

Hulababy · 14/10/2004 19:06

We have a factory shop not far frpm here that sells Osh Kosh much cheaper. On average I pay £4-5 for a t-shirt, £10-£12 for dungarees.

CookieMonster · 14/10/2004 19:18

hana, I love OshKosh too but agree that it is expensive, which is why I only ever buy it on Ebay.

Well, I emailed the seller about this pinafore and she told me it fitted her 4 year old (must be a midget that's all I can say). She offered me the price of the dress as a refund (no p+p), so I said I'd keep it and re-sell it myself on Ebay - and advertise it as being for a 3 year old!

blueteddy · 14/10/2004 19:28

I have always found that Oshkosh clothes come up small & will always buy a size bigger.
My Mum goes out 2 the states a lot & brings back oshkosh things 4 my boys & I find that especially the dungarees r very small (have no experiance of dresses Im afraid!)
My 1.5 yr old is now comfortably fitting in age 24mths oshkosh stuff & he can still get away with 9-12 mths in this country!!
