Which sling?

pinkspottywellies · 22/09/2007 22:04

DD is 10m months and I want to get a sling to put her in occasionally at home so I can get on with making dinner etc when she's a bit tired and clingy. Also for popping out of the car into shops to save getting the buggy out.

I would like one that I will also be able to use with a newborn next time round.

Someone gave me this link the other week. Is this a good sling for what I need (and which one - there are several on the page!) or does anyone recommend another?

TIA

Avi does the hip panda buckle round your waist and shoulders? And buckle the baby in? It doesn't look as easy as the coorie in my link. (Also I'm not keen on any of the fabric options )
Thank you both for your ideas

Not necessarily beautiful - I just want plain and not striking. I think. Or maybe striking and beautiful is the way to go.

I just looked at some ring slings. I've been trying that kind of thing by tying on a scarf recently! I want something that supports her back as high as poss so she doesn't hang backwards.

if you want to experiment with a scarf, wet it and squeeze the water out to make the fabric 'grabby'. If it has a sheen, the knot will slip. you also want a slip knot. if you go to youtube and search 'rebozo knot' and 'ring sling', you ought to find more ideas there.

I found a pouch sling at 10 months really good to pop dd in and out of while out shopping etc. She still uses it for short periods at 2.6 yrs and 27 lbs.

if you email bigmamaslings before you buy, she can advise you on the size you would need. I bought my first pouch sling from sleepytoes.com and she also will help you choose the correct size. With an older child, a larger pouch sling works better.

PSW, I have an ancient and well-loved one of these which is fantastic - I bought another the same when this one went into holes. Anyway, I gave the newer one to my friend but have rather pathetically and sentimentally hung onto the old one. You would be very welcome to borrow it to try it out - the holes are not dangerous, but it is cosmetically tatty.

ergo all the way!

pinkspottywellies · 23/09/2007 20:40

Thanks very much for the offer TooT but I'd be so horrified if anything happened to it or it got lost in the post or something! I'll buy one then like avi says I can always sell it on.

Freedom Slings

Chirpygirl · 23/09/2007 21:46

Pouch slings are great for 'chuck 'em in and get on with it' but I also have a Mei Tai (example here)as then I can put DD on my back when washing up/cooking without her trying to 'help' (or in other words, grab for big sharp knives and hot pans...)

Washersaurus · 23/09/2007 21:50

I have a Murron's Pouch sling from Freedom Slings which is absolutely fab - I used it for DS1 when he was about 18mths and am now using it for DS2 who is 8wks - its a god send when I need to get things done!

I really wanted to try a Mei Tai one but couldn't afford one

PillockOfTheCommunity · 23/09/2007 21:54

washersaurus, have you tried the baby wearing yahoo group? or ebay? I got my Mei tai for £25 from ebay, and my Coorie pouch sling for £7 from the yahoo group

GreebosWhiskers · 23/09/2007 22:14

(sorry pinkspottywellies)

Bouncingturtle - I have the coorie & carry from freedom slings & it is fab but I haven't used it since I bought my mei tai & dh is insisting I sell it. It's black outer & pale grey inner & in perfect condition. If you're interested please email me on [email protected].

Bouncingturtle · 24/09/2007 06:55

Have just emailed you - thanks!

NappiesGalore · 24/09/2007 08:21

i had lots of slings too.
baby bjorn and tomy and all others of same design hurt my back/neck somethign chronic. never managed to carry them for much more than 20 minutes, and not at all really after about 2-3 months...
things with long fiddly complicated straps ect were no good to me as i never got quick enough at putting them on/taking them off an they remained largely unused.
plain old pouch ones never seemed to work for me -newborn either looked lost in it or bigger kids needed arm/s to hold them in anyway... maybe i wasnt doing it right, i dunno.
i had a fleece hip carrier thing which was good for a couple of months before dc got too fidgety...
but i LOVE the ergo.
is comfortable, easy, quick... and i have a Yamo too which is the same shape/design but in gorgeous red fabric.

slings are kinda personal. different body shapes and quirks, different personalities...

i also recommend bigmamaslings and babywearer

Chirpygirl · 24/09/2007 10:07

I second the yahoo babywearing group! I have 2 hand made mei tais, one from sale boards on here, that cost a tenner, and one from there that cost 15 (and has a majorly cool pirate flag on it!)
There is always someone selling a ring sling (adjustabel pouch)/pouch or mei tai nice and cheaply on there.

Washersaurus · 25/09/2007 20:37

Oooh thank you for the tip about the yahoo group, I didn't know about that one!
