Anyone know anything about Pedometers?

Thinking of buying one for dh for his birthday. He does a lot of walking and cycling and I thought it might be useful for him to keep track of how many miles he's covered etc.

But there are so many of the bloody things around, I don't know which one to go for. I don't want to break the bank but I do want a reliable one that he'll actually use and not one that packs in after a month.

Any recommendations?

The experts are all on www's bootcamp thread in the style section - haven't got one, but the unanimous view appears to be that the Omron ones (which you can buy on Amazon) are the best!

I got mine for £15 at a camping store - think it was Black's. They have less expensive ones, but this one measures distance, calories burned, number of steps etc.

LilRedWG · 20/09/2007 16:15

I've got Oregon Scientific. It measures how many steps take, how many calories burnt and how many miles covered. I'm happy with it (except this week, when my number of steps is FAR too low ).

peter just had a basic one from tesco after his LVAD op. was good for keeping track of how far he had walked i na day and kept the physios happy as well. you had to programme it to your stride length etc so it was pretty accurate. no idea whats happened to it though. am assumug he didnt need it after a while, and it didnt just pack up. he used it for about a year.

Oooh, 3 different recommendations!
Which one to choose?

Do they all do the same thing?

Mine is called a Silva....I think.

UnquietDad · 20/09/2007 16:16

I know an angry Mirror-reading mob would probably want to burn one.

LilRedWG · 20/09/2007 16:16

But that's my fault for beng lazy.

Rhubarb · 20/09/2007 16:18

Why would the Mirror burn one?

I'm not bothered about it's ability to count calories, I just thought it would be useful to cover distances. It would need to be able to do this if he were walking or cycling. So which one is best for that?

Hmm, seems like they only work when you are walking. Pity that.

Is there anything I can get that would measure distance covered whilst cycling?

yep, they're called bicycle odometers

UnquietDad · 20/09/2007 16:24

rhubarb - I was trying to make a crap joke about the bunch of Mirror readers who attacked a paediatrician. Ignore me!

Rhubarb · 20/09/2007 16:27

Ooooh right UD, sorry it passed me by. Here's yer coat!

I'll google odometer now, thanks!

Is there not an all-in-one of these things?

OP posts:
Rhubarb · 20/09/2007 16:31

They have a sexual odometer on Amazon!

I'm about to buy the Maplin one - please let me know if it's the right one! The success of his birthday present depends on you!

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

OP posts:
Rhubarb · 20/09/2007 16:43

Right, bought it. The cycling one, not the sexual one. Although I am slightly curious about that one!
