Anyone have an ERGO baby carrier? What's it like?

DH would like to get one because it looks cool . There's no way he's wearing my Moby wrap!

But it's expensive... Do you think it's worth the money?

And how old would baby have to be to use it? I gather it's not great for newborns without the weird insert.

I had one and loved it. I know you have to get the insert thingy with newborns, but I didn't get mine until DD was 6 months or so. I owned and borrowed several different types of baby carriers, and this was definitely the easiest on my back, and I could have her in there for long periods of time without being tired. The only thing I didn't really like was the front and back position were easy to figure out, but when she got bigger and I carried her using the side position, it was really hard to figure out and took a lot of practice to be able to do it quickly. But that could be my issue of not being very good in the spatial relations realm.

I don't know about where you are, but here in the States if you kept yours in good condition, you got a very large chunk of the price back by selling it. I bought mine from a friend who sold them at her cost, and sold it for almost the price I paid for it.

they are good but not fab for newborns no.

I would say from 5 months is without the insert.

any chance you can get him to use one of these-

www.connectababy.com

useable from newborn, UK made, more ethical (ergo have some questionable biz practices) and reversable to the plain side I think

pretty for you... plain for him ;)

I have one that I used for dd fromwhen se could hold her head properly until she was well gone 3. I could actually still carry her in it now if I wasn't pregnant as I know peeps that do.

Mine was the old style one and not suitable for newborns- the new generation one is suitable for newborns.

It is an absolutely fabulous soft carrier and you just don't feel the weight of the child on your back. I love mine and will be using it again with number 2

I have one, got it when ds2 was 7 months, but don't find it that comfortable (the straps just hurt a bit) although he certainly doesn't feel heavy in it. I'd strongly recommend renting one (from bigmamaslings etc) before buying as they're expensive although as doooneygirl says you'll get a lot of the money back (same in the UK). My dp doesn't find it any more comfortable than I do. Definitely agree 6 months plus.
And quite agree with redtent, I wouldn't have bought an ergo had I known about their business practices.

Oh I didn't know about ergo's practices...

The connecta looks like the beco, which I fancied.

The beko is lovely, isn't it? I read on another thread that ergo were trying to put them out of business.

redtent · 18/09/2007 21:40

connecta is similar to beco but doesn't have a padded waist strap- reviews over at tbw still say it is very comfy.

Beco's are hard to get hold of in the uk right now and customs charges are a pita .

There are a few similar things too-

Moshi infant carrier
Angelpack LX
Pikkolo (about to be released)
Patapum

even the new gen ergo needs an insert to be suitable for under 5/6 months. Beco also has insert, patapum is minimum 5 months.

the connecta is the only one iirc that can actually be made narrow at the bottom so you can use it with a newborn.

I agree about hiring if you can- OR go along to a www.slingmeet.co.uk and try one out there. We have a good library (and our personal collections) available to our local group.. and most slingmeets are building up nice librarys.
