Peugeot key won't start car

Peugeot 207, battery ran out in key fob. Battery changed, now key will open the doors but not start the car! When you turn the key it just clicks, and a message is displayed saying the anti theft system is enabled.

The key must still be 'linked' to the car as it opens and closes the doors. We've tried disconnecting/reconnecting the battery to reset it but it just won't start.

We can't move the car to get it to a garage, and obviously we're in lockdown so that's another issue, but has anyone had this before???

Is it an easy fix, or are the electrics done for - it's an 07 plate, and all I can get from google is that the electrics on Peugeot's of this age are awful ☹️

Disconnect the car battery for 5 minutes then after connecting the battery perform the following steps

  1. Turn the Ignition switch to the ON position using your key.
  2. Press the LOCK button for 10 seconds. It will set your ECU in programming mode.
  3. Remove the key and wait for 10 seconds.
  4. Press the buttons on the key repetedly for operation (lock and unlock doors) to synchronise the key signals.
  5. Again turn the ignition on and start the engine.
  6. Turn the ignition OFF

Thank you 1555CC, we'll give it a try 🤞

Didn't work...
On 2) nothing happened at all, so I suspect the ECU is a goner.
We had a 206 a couple of years older than this 207 and the ECU on that died at about the same age.

Thanks for your help though

Try this,

press and hold the large button on your key fob, after 20 seconds press the small button while still pressing the large one, the led light will go out and will reset your remote.

There are various fixes for different models/years. If the first one didn't work, this one might.

Key doesn't really have a big & small button - pic attached

Try both the top and bottom buttons as the "big" one and the middle button and the "small" one. If that fails, here's another possible fix:-

Step 1 : put key in then ignition and turn to position 1 then to position 2.
Step 2 : when in position 2 make sure the red light in the centre of the dashboard is flashing rapidly. Step 3 : while holding the central locking button on the key turn to position 1 then back to position 2. This should stop the the light flashing and should just stay on constantly, you can now hopefully start your engine

That doesn't seem to work either.

Thanks for trying

This is probably a daft question, but have you looked in the handbook. Is there anything for resetting or syncing the keyfob following a battery change?

boredboss · 06/05/2020 16:57

We have looked, couldn't see anything, but we'll check again

I had this happen. Had to get a new key as the chip had failed in it. (According to the AA man.) Works fine but wasnt the cheapest fix (around 300 a few years ago.(

That was a skoda though.

boredboss · 06/05/2020 18:36

That's what's so confusing / annoying as the chip in the key must be working as it locks & unlocks the car, it just doesn't start the dam thing!
