toddler toilet wipe conundrum

Ok, the TV ads sold me on the idea of these new toddler toilet wipes and I bought a box, much to my son's delight.

In theory you keep a box by the loo for your toddler to use after a poo so you are free from botton wiping, don't have to be there at all, and your toddler can do the whole toilet bit from start to finish.

The toilet wipes are apparently flushable. They feel just like thin babywipes.

First time out the toddler grabbed a handful before I swiped the box away. I see this repeating itself if the box is left conveneintly near the loo for him. Stuffed down the loo, the pipes will clog up sure is sure.

I don't think my toddler is unique here. What toddler would just use the one, thank you very much?

Soooo.... you put the wipes out of toddler reach and hand them our one by one? you hover in the background ready to dive in?

Surely this negates the whole point of the wipes?

tigermoth, I wasn't as optimistic as you were and bought a pack to ensure that ds learned to wiped his bottom (under supervision) with something that was comfy on his bottom and which could then be flushed away.

Oho, a new product I seem to have missed out on...are they cheaper or more expensive than ordinary moist toilet paper? We invested in some of this because of the comfort factor for ds, but for exactly the same reasons as Tigermoth we use the wipes on his behind at the moment. Accept your fate, Tigermoth - you are going to be on botty-wiping detail for a while yet, I fear...

Mmmm, bottom wiping. Dd has developed an alarming habit of bending over and grabbing her ankles, giving you excellent access but a bit of a startling view.

I have a septic tank so I am too afraid to use the new wipes, although they sound good. We still use loo roll first then a normal wipe to 'finish' off. I can't see why the new ones should be any more flushable than ordinary wipes? Are they cheaper?

We always use the andrew moist toilet wipes, and you can get a box for them which feed one at a time, much like the tissue boxes. However, I still hand them to my 5 year old one at a time. Does stop those anoying little 'stripes' though (if you know what I mean).
BTW thanks mumsnet, I've just been in floods of tears after posting on the bereavement one, and now find myself talking about wiping bottoms!

Rhubarb · 12/09/2002 12:55

Silly question I know but exactly how do you teach girls to wipe their bottoms front to back? It seems awfully complicated and requires some knowledge of yoga surely?

Tissy · 12/09/2002 13:18

Enid- Pampers Kandoo wipes are biodegradable, so should be fine for a septic tank. We have one and were advised not to use ordinary wipes as they are not biodegradable! I spent ages trying to find moist toilet tissue that would be OK for our tank (even Tushies wipes aren't recommended), and ended up just using paper with a bit of baby oil or lotion on!

Hi I would be extremely cautious about using any form of moist wipes and flushing them down the loo. Last year I found the toilets in our house were taking ages to drain after flushing. I ended up calling out a plumber who tried his best but found that the main outdoor drain was blocked. Eventually Thames Water (responsible for the drain, thank goodness!!) came and cleared it out. The main pipe was completely blocked with wipes!! As I had a baby in my arms at the time, you can imagine the look on my face when the guy told me about this. He advised that anyone with a baby didn't flush the wipes and that the "so called flushable type" - his words - were just as bad!!

Anyway, the thought of my ds, 6½, just using one piece is laughable

rhubarb - we do 'front first, then the back', but dd only really wipes herself after wees at the moment as pooing in the loo is a rare occurrence.

I'm going to bypass these wipes as I am paranoid about anything blocking the drains/septic tank.

I told my dd (4) to wipe the front first then the back. She has taken this to mean that she uses a seperate piece of paper for each and it seems to work quite well. She uses less paper for wiping than making flowers whilst sitting there! I thought these new toddler toilet wipes seemed a bit expensive, especially if my artist decided to use them for something else.

mears · 14/09/2002 00:15

We need to be clear what 'front to back' means. Little girls, when they are able to reach should be encouraged to reach the front from the back, then 1 wipe backwards. If their arms are not long enough to do that then I would do it for them. By reaching the front straight downwards they are inclined to wipe upwards increasing he risk of urinary infections by dragging bugs upwards - if you follow what I mean.
Such a technical business. I think toddler wipes are a rip off by the way

I bought a box of the flushable wipes...and I like them, and dd does too...as they're called her 'big girl wipes'. Her bottom wiping isn't great yet...so she likes to bed over and stick her bottom in teh air and ask us to wipe her, but she isn't even two yet so I don't mind! lol! I do like the fact you can just flush them down the toilet though, as it's great to get rid of the smeely nappies with her being trained during the day, so being rid of the smelly wipes is great too!

Tesco do flushable wipes in a yellow packet. My darling DD likes to use her knickers as toilet paper. We have had two woman to woman conversations about this this week. Aargh!
