When we went to North Pole Alaska in 2002 we visited Santa's house and you can order letters to be delivered. The cool thing is that they are stamped 'north pole'. Check it out here

Trouble is, Chuffed, that in the UK tradition Father Christmas doesn't come from the North Pole but from Lapland!

I definately gew up thinking Santa came from the North Pole!

80sMum · 07/10/2004 22:06

Really? And you're from the UK? That surprises me, but I suppose all things US come to the UK in the end. Shame. I can't be the only Laplander left; waht about all those holiday companies that run trips to Lapland around Christmas time?

Report
soapbox · 07/10/2004 22:12

Yep - from Scotland. Don't ever recall anyone saying Santa came from Lapland until I heard of the trips you are talking about. But that was only after having my own children.

Don't think its an American thing - the Scots wouldn't fall for that generally

North Pole here too.

80sMum · 07/10/2004 22:26

Maybe it's an age thing. I just didn't know anyone who thought he came from the North Pole when I was growing up. Are there really no other Laplanders out there?

Report
Portree · 07/10/2004 23:07

I'm Scottish too and every year I 'posted' my letters up the chimney and they were definitely going to the North Pole! And I'm still this side of 40. Lapland? When did that happen?

Northpole here in Ireland too

It's just taken me ages to work out who S*A was and what you were refering to...

I just didn't want to have the same situation that arose last week when another mumsnetters child oftent sat beside them while surfing.

Jampot - more info please. What do your homemade ones look like. I like the thought of a homemade one - more personal. I know there are sites that you can give some info and they make one for you but I can't find any good ones. Also some don't post out of USA or UK.

Never knew there were so many North Polers out there! Had a look at some 'History of Christmas' websites. Apparently the Americans pretty well invented the Santa we know today, with the help of a Coca Cola advert! They said he came from the North Pole, but then people realised that nothing lives there and you couldn't graze reindeer there, so in the 1920s the Lapland story came out (reindeer do come from Lapland, after all) to make it seem more realistic and believable!.

disco - i used some decadry paper (xmassy) and typed a letter using personal info supplied by parents and then sprinkled some "magic dust" (fine glitter) inside so it sparkles and some falls out and then post it to the lucky kid

Will do that I think. May get a friend to write it though in case writing would be recognised. My DD1 is very astute.

Yep Santa is from the North Pole. I did letters myself for my children with glitter and pictures of reindeers - their little faces were a picture - bet mine was too happy day!

I have joined this thread a bit late but sorry to tell you all that Santa is definitely from Lapland.
He lives in a place called Korvatunturi, which is Finnish for Ear Mountain which means he can hear what all the children are doing all over the world and whether they have been good boys and girls.
I lived in Finland for a few years and over there its very serious that Santa is from Lapland. Its a fab place to visit. The also have a great deal going over there. Each child has an Advent calendar with a spac for a little sweet. If they have been good that day an elf will come in the night an put a sweet in that days pocket. The elves are everywhere you go, at school, in the shops, the park and the woods so you cannot be sure whether they are watching or not. I certainly want to try this one with my dd when she is a bit older

Carameli - that may well be true - but I think what some of us are saying - well what I'M saying is that WE were told he was from the North Pole! Anyway, wherever he is - I hope he's busy - he's got a big job coming up

Well, one of my favourite books is Tolkien's "Letters from Father Christmas" which is totally magical, and he DEFINITELY lived at the North Pole!! Actually had never heard of the lapland version until they started advertising trips there.

Did you know that if you post a letter to Santa in any UK post box you will get a reply? I'm not sure about the address, I think they accept all of them and forward them to the man himself, and he sends back a Christmas card (I think) with the correct postmark signed from him.
(I must add that I have never done it, and only assume that it still exists, it did a couple of years ago, and I have no idea how good or tacky the reply is.)

We always gave our letters to mum to post, (we didn't have a chimney which is obviously the correct place to post them!!

Yep, I always thought he lived at the North Pole as well. I know that you can visit his house at Lapland, but as I only found out about that once I was older I assumed that if you took your kids there you would tell them you were going to the North Pole.
