it's time i got my three and a half year old a proper bed. any ideas? looking for something cheapish but not too naff. ideally with another bed underneath, or at least some storage drawers. john lewis has lots of stuff but too pricey..
any suggestions?

I got my ds a junio divan from argos, with storage. Only cost £100 and it's fine.

We just went with a mothercare one and have under bed storage boxes from a diy shop for toys. this is ours . We have the standard matress at £50 so it was fairly reasonably priced which was just as well as we had to buy two! (dd and ds). We are happy with the quality and they are a bit lower than a normal bed so great for small children.

what about ikea? was there the other day and i'm sure they had some nice ones, they're usually quite good with storage too.

My ds1 has this bed along with some of the other range to go underneath it. We got it when he was 1 and had it on the lowest point. When he was three we moved it to the poition you see in the picture. We were thinking about moving it the next level now he's five.

We have the Flexa range for ds (see Flip's list for Flexa site)and have just got the white version for dd although not put together yet.

Don't buy the cheapo (£45 ??) one from Ikea to tide us over until DS can have a mid height one - we did & DH is constantly fixing it as the slats fall out !

try asapceuk.com - very good solidly built beds in lots of styles all with trundle beds that slot underneath them

princesspeahead · 08/10/2004 09:40

sorry, aspaceuk.com. let me try a link here

Vikare extendable beds from IKEA - cheap, reasonable looking, nice and low. We now have FOUR of them in various colours, and the older two children have just graduated to having proper sprung mattresses on theirs (fully extended) Only 80cm wide, but seem big enough for our two skinny ones!
You can just buy simple roll under drawers to go under them. We just have one spare little mattress that gets used for anyone sho is having a sleepover - we try not to let it happen too often

I used a company called Kiddiebeds (OK, naff name, but great service; I rang the company to order it on the Monday and it arrived that Thursday) at www.kiddiebeds.co.uk (can't do links, sorry). They make a range called Thuka (which I think is posted on their website as the 'Maxi' system) which you can add to, so a single bed can be converted to bunks or a cabin style bed. They also have a range of storage drawers that fit underneath. The bed we got for ds is solid and sturdy and we've bought the kit to convert it to something a bit higher with a ladder in a year or so. Not sure what your budget is, but I think the bed and mattress plus kit to raise the bed up, with ladder and tent was about £300.
