So it's come out that from the 30th cars are exempt from mot as long as the car is road worthy. I had mine booked in for next week as it runs out on the 30th but obviously I don't know if that will go ahead now. So am I exempt or not? I haven't heard anything from kwik fit yet, I assume they may have a lot of customers to contact if they're cancelling appointments.

Mine is due 10th April. I am assuming that with the 6 month extension, I have until 10th October to get it done now.

This should be updated at some point on the government portal where you can check whether a car has tax and MOT. But give them time - it was only annnounced this morning.

playthestation · 25/03/2020 10:44

If it's booked just take it. Why would you cancel?

Eve · 25/03/2020 10:50

My sons is due 26th March - booked in this Friday :-(

Why the sad face? That's good.

How do you know if your car is roadworthy?

Obviously everyone can check tyres, oil and coolant, and pay attention to warning lights?
I suppose there are various things which are on a standard schedule eg we know that DHs car is supposed to have a new timing belt (whatever that is) at a certain mileage, though that may well take longer to get to than we'd anticipated.

Is there anything else people should check? Can we be sure about eg brake pads?

Our garage is staying open with a skeleton staff.

All mechanics are wearing new gloves for every car etc.

We’re maintaining the local Red Cross vehicles because the main dealer has refused to take the as they’re being used as back up for the NHS.

We sorted a nurses car out on Monday.

We’re an essential service for those that need their cars to move about.

Garages are staying open for repairs and mot's. It doesn't mean you have to wait six months. It will be chaos in six months time if every just waits.

Not all. My local garage called me yesterday to cancel my booking because they are closing for 3 weeks because of the scottish government advice. I could take it elsewhere but it would involve buses, public transport, coming into contact with loads of other people. This is the only garage within walking distance.

I won't be waiting until exactly 6 months, but will get the car done at some point over the summer.

goldie04 · 25/03/2020 13:34

I'm not planning on cancelling, I just wanted to know if the garage cancel it then I'm exempt still

Because work needed for an MOT can cost more than the car is worth or the price of another second hand one. Finding a replacement budget car in current conditions will be virtually impossible.

Eh? That poster never said anything about buying another car Confused what nonsense.

I took mine to get a puncture repaired yesterday. Everyone kept their distance. Guys were wearing gloves. It was fine.
