My sis and fiance are buying a Wii console for Christmas for my 4 DCs, DH and me. ! I am very excited about it but want to make sure I have all we need to get the most out of it at Christmas, so I just wondered if you good folk would advise me on what I need so that it can be enjoyed by as many of us possible i.e How many controllers and what sort can you use/ do you need? Really fantastic family games, extra bits and pieces? TIA

Oh, well we've not had ours long and have 2 controls and a game that came with one of the controls called Wii Play. We also have Super Mario Party 8 and have just bought Big Brain Academy. DH deeply covets the new Tiger Woods game. We don't dislike any of it yet and the kids really like the little games on Wii Play.

An extra remote control is the first thing you must get. It only comes with one wii-mote, and you need at least two so that you can play against each other, eg in tennis. You could probably do with 2 nunchucks too, although that's less important.

LazyLinePainterJane · 08/09/2007 21:36

The Wii Sports and Wii play games are excellent staples that you can pick up and play. You won't play them for hours but you will come back to them. For some of the games you can share controllers for multiplayer modes, you pass the controller from player to player. For some though, you would need one controller each.

It is unlikely however that you would need more than 2 nunchucks.

Zelda is a great single player game and Warioware can be multiplayer but you have to complete the single player first.

Also Big Brain Academy is great fun, I know a 6 year old that plays it to some degree.

You can get 3rd party accessory packs that the kids like, there is one that has a tennis racket handle, golf club and steering wheel that you attach the controller to and you can use them to play the Wii Sports with.

Huge thanks guys, this is really helpful.

My DCs are 12, 10, 8 & 5 so hoping we can find something we can all enjoy together, he Big Brain one appeals - especailly if smallest one can join in, so 2 remotes would be ok(?)and if I got a second numchuck would we be able to use all 4 controllers (2 remote + 2 numchusks)on one game? Sorry to be so dense, I really have absolutley no idea how they work as you can tell.

or "Nuthatch control" as ds1 (6) calls it .

mindalina · 08/09/2007 21:51

The 10 and 12 year olds and you and DH may enjoy Trauma Centre: Second Opinion, possibly not suitable for littler children as a little bit gory, but it is really good imo!

LyraBelacqua · 08/09/2007 21:53

Wii Play, because you get an extra controller with it (you get one in the box with the Wii as well as a nunchuk).
Wario Ware is a favourite in our house. My boys love Happy Feet and I love Zelda. DP loves Call of Duty. I've just got the Brain Games one but haven't played it yet.

LyraBelacqua · 08/09/2007 21:54

You'll need four controllers if you want to play at the same time. The nunchuks don't have all the functions of the remote.

mindalina · 08/09/2007 21:56

lol at nuthatch style!! When you start TRauma Centre there is a screen that comes up saying "This game is controlled with the Nunchuk style" - has me and dp in stitches everytime.

mindalina · 08/09/2007 21:57

Ooh yes I love Zelda too, especially the horse!!!

DragonFaerie · 08/09/2007 21:58

LOL at Nuthatch Bagpuss! Thanks folks,I guess I'll be putting controllers on their Christmas lists...!

I love the silly controller positions in Wario.

I cannot wait for Paper Mario

LyraBelacqua · 09/09/2007 19:00

I love the silly 'Let's Pose' bits in Wario Ware. A very, very silly game but loads of fun.

ladymuck · 09/09/2007 19:04

If you sign up to Tesco DVD rentals then you can rent Wii games, which is a good way of trying them out before you buy. We loved Shrek, but had done the whole game in a few days so decided not to buy. Cars went down well with our 6yo so is a buy for us. Wii play and sports are great and very good staples.

FannyBeaumont · 30/09/2007 00:36

Sport and Play definitely a good start for the whole family (3yo DD is remarkably good at golf and ten-pin bowling!).

If you like quest-y type games, then Super Paper Mario is great. Also just bought Zelda Twilight Princess today and it's fab.

If you do end up getting any games that you find you don't like or play much, you can trade them in at Game stores. You don't need to have bought them at Game or have a receipt. They just check the condition, then offer you an amount which can be deducted immediately from any new purchase, or put on a Game card for future purchases... DH recently traded in two £40 games and got £25 and £18 for them (think amount depends on how new/desirable they are), so easily enough to buy a new game with a bit left over.

Have fun!
