Cots/cotbeds - what are the best for design and function?

I'm a new mum and need to buy a cot for my dd before she grows out of the moses basket. There are so many to choose from so wondered whether you experienced mums have any advice for which is best? Obviously want safety and comfort to come first but would also like it to look nice - not too boring and not to cutesy. Any suggestions? Price not really an issue. Thanks!!!

would definitely go for a cot bed-they are bigger and so last longer. DD who is rising three has just had her cot converted to a bed-it is perfect for her.

I would second the cot bed. I have two, one still as a cot for DS2 and one which is now as a little bed for DS1.

Mine are from Toys r us and are fine.

I did buy the best sprung mattress' we could afford though.

yes the matress is the most important element of all. Spend as much as you can afford on a decent one it makes all the difference

Absolutely the best cot (IMHO ) is the Brio Bedside Cot. I think it may not be called Brio anymore, though. You can fix the cot mattress to be exactly the same height as your bed mattress, put the dropside way over agains the other, fixed, cotside, and have the cot as an extension of your bed. The baby is right at hand, without actually being in your bed. Wonderful.

It also has a genuinely one-handed dropside operation as the lock is in the middle of the bottom of the dropside, rather than one on either side.

But absolutely the best part about it is that the sides move with the cotbase, so you never need to lower the mattress, not even once the baby is standing. A conventional cot is utterly gruelling if you have to try to put a sleeping baby in it without waking up. Especially if he's still not sleeping at 10m (mine!).

Cotbed gets another vote here.
Cos they are nice and big you don't feel the need to put them in a big bed before they are really ready. My DD is 2.5 and is still in her cotbed, and has loads of room to roll around. I don't think she would still fit in a cot though.

Another vote for cot bed

Another vote for cot bed

Def cot bed. Had to shell out for 2 toddler beds, waterproof sheets and mattresses for my twins. If only I'd done the research and got the cotbed version of their Mothercare cot, would have saved a fortune!!!!!

Very nice and fresh looking

Does anyone have any ideas about where I can find a bedside cot with a side that slides up and over rather than underneath? (I haven't got space next to my bed to pull the side out and under). I've seen the Brio one advertised but cannot find a stockist anywhere (phone numbers not recognised and websites all say out of stock). I found one on ebay but it would mean a 400 mile drive on my own at 38 weeks pregnant! Thanks for any suggestions.

cosatto or O-Baby

Thanks PreggersAgain. I've tried both of these, and many others, with no success. I'm after the cot that PrettyCandles recommends, or something that works in the same way (i.e. side sliding over the top). No-one seems to make them anymore.
Maybe I'll have to have a rethink...

PrettyCandles · 07/09/2007 23:15

We got ours from John Lewis. I've just had a peek on the website and they don't have it, but I know they still carried it a couple of years ago when I needed some spares. I have a suspicion it was no longer called Brio by then. If you have a JL nearby, perhaps you could ask a Nursery Dept manager - they might remember it and be able to tell you the new name.

MissingMySleep · 07/09/2007 23:48

If you decide on a bedside cot where the side goes under not over, then I would recommend the mothercare one, very pretty, very good.

Didnt have a bedside cot for 1st baby (went for cotbed instead) and with hindsight decided I wanted a bedside cot. Sliding baby in and out of bed without having to get up properly is fab if you are sleep deprived, and holding hands with baby in the night is great if you are a wuss like me.

skippyla · 08/09/2007 13:08

Thanks everyone. JL don't sell the slide over the top design any more, think I'll have to settle for the other bedside design and rearrange the rest of the room! I didn't have a bedside one for my first either (nine years ago but I still remember the sleeplessness and anything that helps with that has got to be a great big help.)
Thanks again.
