There's one with cows, too... hold on for a moment, ok Heifer International

Love the idea.

Oh, world vision do this too - loads of different gifts - here .

(Oxfam are copycatting!)

MrsCoddyClooney · 03/10/2004 17:45

World Vision is extremely Christian. My parents were very involved in our church when I was little and I have always thought of them (WV, not my parents) as creepy. Might have just been the guys I associated them with, though.

Of course, the above is rumour and innuendo, not to be taken as any sort of remotely verifiable fact (except for the extremely Christian bit).

World Vision are a bit godly, yes. Our sponsored child's greetings always say god bless you etc which we could do without. OTOH they have some excellent projects and achieve some fantastic things...

Lisa78 · 03/10/2004 20:26

Excellent, that solves the problem of what to get the MIL for Christmas

Hey, I have bought you a cow... nothing personal

Debbiethemum · 03/10/2004 20:34

We did something similar, for a recent family wedding some of us have clubbed together and given a farm via worl vision and for my parents we gave 7 trees via the woodland trust for their ruby weddiing anniversery. They had all specified no presents which I thought we had got round nicely.
My parents went to visit their trees (well the bit of woodland where they were) after the anniversery and took photo's. If I can give my mother a present and make her cry, I know I made a very good choice.

I am a Very Bad Person as I really don't want a goat for Christmas.

I did this for a number of people last Xmas (from Heifer International). They were all very touched (and I mean they mentioned it several times, it wasn't just a cursory "oh thanks. How nice.")

AuntyQuated · 03/10/2004 21:27

we used WV and bought 10 chickens as a thank you to DS's nursery when he left. they thought it was brilliant and cried when we gave them the card. i did recommend this on the thread about end of term prezzies for teachers but i think folk that i'd gone cuckoo, nevermind turkey.

AuntyQuated · 03/10/2004 21:28

but i think folk that i'd gone cuckoo, nevermind turkey

should read

but i think folk thought that i'd gone cuckoo, nevermind chicken!!!

Another charity "CONCERN" does this - my friend chose it as her favoured charity for donations instead of flowers at her funeral. Her parents bought a pig for a village on her birthday and I bought some exercise books and pens for a school. It's a really good idea - especially when you think of some of the c**p we give and receive at Christmas - it also really helps to give some sort of meaning to her totally untimely doeath

KateandtheGirls · 03/10/2004 21:32

Auntyquated, my daughter's school teachers were 2 of the people I bought gifts for (chickens I think). I'm sure they don't need any more mugs/ Xmas tree ornamants etc.

lou33 · 03/10/2004 21:47

I thought this thread was about eating a goat instead of turkey!

carla · 03/10/2004 22:02

AuntyQ, can you give us a link??? Love that idea for school, tho' ours school would probably want it to go to people. They set their own agenda ..CAFOD ... local homeless scheme etc .. do you think in those circumstances they still might appreciate it? I would, if I were the head, but I might be seen as 'not looking after people'.????

Lisa78 · 03/10/2004 22:03

at Lou

AuntyQuated · 03/10/2004 22:04

this should be it Carla

AuntyQuated · 03/10/2004 22:05

by the way, i think that if your school do any sort of charity work then they would appreciate a charity gift of any sort

carla · 03/10/2004 22:12

AQ, I KNOW dd1s teacher would love this as a Christmas present. I'm a bafoon ... how can I save this link??

carla · 03/10/2004 22:19

Thanks for that link, Aunty. Am going to buy the two chickens for Christmas for dd1's teacher ... I know she'd love it !!!

AuntyQuated · 03/10/2004 22:45
