Does anyone have an I-Pace or an E-Niro?

I want my next car to be electric as now that the range of them has generally increased they would work well for me.

I'm going to test drive two next week, the I-Pace and the E-Nero. Does anyone have either of them? I'm not sure that I'm going to be able to compare them as they are so incredibly different, one is three times the price of the other for a start. There doesn't seem to be anything that would suit me in my usual price range (would normally pay between €55K-€70K), so one is way below and the other is way above. I like a car that's fun to drive and is well designed and has driver comfort foremost (like heated seats and very adjustable seat position/steering wheel etc). I'm a bit worried that the E-Niro is going to be plastic-y and basic. But on the other hand €100K is a completely ridiculous amount to pay for a car, even if it's car of the year over conventional engines.

The other one that I might consider is the Outlander PHEV, but a friend of mine has an Outlander and, while she finds it really practical and reliable, it really hasn't stood up to family life in its finishes. There are lots of plastic bits that are covering a screw head for instance, or on the end of the seat adjustment rail, that have just detached themselves and disappeared. Plus, although I don't care about looks all that much, it's really, really ugly.

What about a tesla model 3?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 14/02/2020 20:20

I think the Model 3 is probably too small. I have a large-ish dog who travels in a crate in the boot, plus two DC and often a friend, plus luggage. The Model X would work, but it's the same price more or less as the I-Pace. Also I think Tesla only have a sales showroom in Ireland, if anything goes wrong I think they need to take it somewhere else like the UK for the Tesla workshop, and apparently they do go wrong more often than some other electric cars. Although I might be wrong about that as I see quite a few Teslas on the roads here and I can't imagine they would be that popular if repair and servicing was an issue.

If you can wait, the model Y might suit?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 23/02/2020 22:00

I might have to wait a bit for some more new electric cars to come out so I might consider the model Y then.

I test drove the I-Pace and it is FABULOUS. I'm not sure it's over €100k of fabulous though, I'd say it's about €80k quality and pleasure and €25k unnecessary flashiness.

I wanted to test drive an E-Niro but the salesman said that he's not getting any into the showroom until April at which time he will get eight of them. He doesn't know anything about them, colour, finish, equipment or exact price but he's already sold five of the eight. So he's going to give me a call to book a test drive if he still has an unsold one in April. Shock It's not how I'm used to buying cars.

I wanted an e-niro but since it won the what car award it’s got a 12 month Watling list also looked at the Kona which is basically the same car. But again got a 12 month wait.

I ended up going for the long range leaf which has been left behind by some of the newer ones but cheap a chips too lease.

Don’t think the iPace or the eNiro will be any good for your dog both quiet small cars

Megan2018 · 25/02/2020 03:43

I had an e-niro for 3 months on hire when in between my own ev’s.
I liked a lot of things about it, the interior was actually good for a Kia. It was very responsive and the range is true.
It has a very loud and whiny motor-a bit of a shock after driving my i3S and it is especially bad around 40-45mph. Did my head in.
The wheels spin too so you can’t actually use all it’s power.

I liked it though on the whole but don’t think it was worth the price as the Tesla model 3 was only slightly more money per month and far better.

I think you’ll find it far too small for a large dog though.

We just got our I-pace and love it. Range is great (key for us) and good fun to drive. We leased as I think likely that electric cars will develop significantly over next few years...

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 25/02/2020 08:48

The dog's crate would probably fit in the I-Pace, but quite awkwardly. At the moment we use a VW Tiguan and the crate takes up about two thirds of the boot with half of the back seat moved slightly forwards (only about an inch). I did a cursory measure of the boot of the I-Pace and the crate would have to be in the centre of the boot because the sides aren't straight, there would also be a bit of dead space behind it because the back seats lean backwards quite a bit.

I forgot to ask what was at the front, there's quite a lot of bonnet for a car that doesn't have a combustion engine but the salesman didn't mention storage space like the Tesla has.

There is a small storage tray in front which fits the chargers but not much else. We got a roof box for when we have our dog in the boot (he isn't crated). We looked at a Kia and boot seemed smaller.

DH has an i-pace, he has also gone for a lease and the monthly costs are fairly reasonable. Good way to dip your toe into the water?
