When can you start to use bunk beds?

DS1 is growing out of his toddler bed. As their room is small, I'd prefer bunk beds to two singles but he only turns five in December. Would that be old enough for the top bunk? He's not a fidgetty sleeper and never falls out of his current bed which has no bed guard. I just have reservations as some of the bunk beds I've looked at say the top bunk isn't suitable till the child is six.

dd2 is in the top bunk, she turned five at the weekend.

however last night i didnt know that dd3 (2yrs old) was asleep on the top bunk and she fell off the ladder during the night climbing down, is unhurt, but if your younger child is a climber then just keep an extra eye out.

DD stayed in the top bunk at a friend's the other night (4 yrs old) and was fine apparently! I was as I kind of thought she was in a readybed on the floor.

I've seen some bunk beds that aren't very high- not that you want him to fall off any height but have seen them at mid sleeper height

Mmm, hadn't thought of DS2 climbing up there in the night. It's exactly the sort of thing he'd do!! I guess if I buy the sort that can be single beds too, I can always use them as singles if we do have problems and go back to bunks when they're older. Anyone got any good bunk bed recommendations? I was just going to go for something from Argos.

Thing with bunks is that they have barrier all the way round so they are less likely to fall out.

The ladder climbing thing is precisely why DS is staying in his cot until he is 6 (DD has a normal bed until he is out of his cot)

dd1 has slept on the top bunk for about 6 months now and loves it, she 4.5yrs.

we have these

work really well as dd1 finds the slanted ladder easier to climb up and the ladder is easy to remove, which is what I do when dd2 is napping or she'll be up there.

Very good quality and excellent customer service

Those are lovely

Depends on the child. My DDs were in those midi-sleeper type beds, approx chest height to an adult, when they were 3, and they have never fallen out.

mummydoit · 03/09/2007 13:10

I'm now wondering if two mid-sleeper beds would be better. I assume you can get them with drawers/cupboards underneath? My problem is that I don't have space for two beds plus cupboards/wardrobes.

SD was 5.5 when we bought her a bunk bed. She had never fallen out of it.

When we went bed hunting a couple of months back, the guy who was serving us said that they dont like to sell bunks to parents with children under 6.

sandyballs · 03/09/2007 13:58

Have a look in Argos - they have some nice mid-sleppers with cupboards/wardrobes underneath. Perfect for a small room. My DD's love theirs.

my 3 and 4 yos both sleep on top bunks

zubb · 04/09/2007 14:13

ds1 slept in top bunk from 4. Ds2 doesn't climb up at all which is useful!
