We're looking into getting dd either a happy land set or a little people set -does anyone know what the differnce is between them.

And can you recomend any typical set?

I know that we had the happy land farm set and ds and dd loved them!

stupidgirl · 30/09/2004 23:03

Don't know about the little people ones (are they the fisher price ones?) but my kids love the happy land ones.

Happy land has gone down very well in our house too and we got 3 for 2 last Xmas for dd. She now has house, hospital, vets and bakery. Still plays with them loads.

We have Happy Land things and DD adores them. Had them since Christmas and they are played with for ages at a time, very very often.

DD has the house, the hospital, the farm, intercity train set, extra tracks, extra people and more vehicles. The range has changed a little bit this catalogue but I am keen to get her more. DD loves the sound affects and the pieces are nice and chunky, and look really sturdy. They have put up with a lot of use from a few kiddies at our place.

Like Yorkiegirl - we got a lot of 3 for 2 offers last Christmas, and used a code to buy online with 20% discount (thing there's a thread already on the ELC codes).

Ds got the Fisher Price Farm for Xmas last year and hasn't stopped playing with it since.

From what I can work out, Happy Land (Early Learning Centre's version) has many more smaller sets to collect and is cheaper. Fisher Price has fewer sets and is ever so slightly more expensive. Personally I prefer the Fisher Price quality BUT if you wanted a huge amount to play with then Happy Land offers that.

Do you not find the Little People ones a little more fragile and less sturdy than the Hppy Land though? My friend's DS has some of both sets and we both felt that the Happy Land stuff was better for littler hands and less likely to get broken. Her DS had broken one of the moveable beds from the Little People house

conker · 01/10/2004 09:29

we have some little people stuff and some ELC stuff too

FWIW my kids prefer the 'normal' farm animals from ELC with a wooden farm set, just to throw a spanner in the works! I think they are more real

muddaofsuburbia · 01/10/2004 09:32

I've only got the farm. I've only seen and held the HP stuff in the shop on display. The Fisher Price stuff we've got is bomb- proof. But then ds now has all my fisher-price stuff from when I was wee, so it could just be that I've been brain washed growing up

conker · 01/10/2004 09:33

forgot to add the fisher price train set is much better for younger children as it 'locks' in place whereas happy land stuff comes apart, is fine for older kids but not younger iykwim

FD - of you do go for Happy Land, there is an active 20% code: HL1 still works 20% off

Bagpuss30 · 01/10/2004 09:44

We have both but dd is especially pleased with her latest Happy Land sets which are the Post Office and Market Stalls. I think the market stalls one is quite good as not only can the people sit in the car but you can load up the back with fruit and veg crates and bunches of flowers. FP sets are flimsier I think but then I have caught my two standing on the garage and using it as a climbing frame on occasion which I doubt is recommended!

LIZS · 01/10/2004 12:38

We have had Little People and have found it really good and hard wearing - no breakages in 5 years although the googly eyes on the bus don't really work any more. I have felt that the people and cars etc are less fiddly for young hands to operate than Happy Street and the people fit the cars more snugly. The range in Europe and US is somewhat more extensive though, with smaller add on sets and vehicles, and this makes for more play value. They update the key pieces regularly so that you can extend it across more than one child without too much duplication.

My mum has Happy Street and both my kids will play with that too but personally not so keen on having a track unless it is a train set and we have found that different "generations" of the range are not fully compatible with each other.

Ds twins got the Little People garage and train set for their first birthday. Nearly two years later they both still get played with on a near enough daily basis. I must admit though the figures and animals are great for little hands to get hold of.

They also have a Fisher Price stackable cars set that is a favourite.

However don't get the excavator set as it is a bit pointless!

hi all happy land is at Boots at 3 for 2, with the gift scheme.

Hulababy · 03/10/2004 08:25

Ooh really; might go and have a look then at Meadowhall as DD wants some fof it for Christmas.
