And if you don't, do you know of a website like Mumsnet except full of very dull men who know nothing of art, culture, literature or the finer things of life, but can give me the total run-down on cars?

I want to know how much it costs to run and whether it's any good (have a possibility of getting one cheap)

A heavier car with a bigger engine is going to cost more to run though. You will never find something with a considerably more powerful engine that is as cheap to run, petrol-wise, as your 800cc Matiz.

It's just a question of whether you think that the extra few £'s you save in petrol by driving your Matiz makes up for the driving/ownership experience.

The fact is that for a 1.8 petrol engined car, the Focus is good value to run. Whether your budget runs to it is of course, another story.

NomDePlumeCantFindTheCatch · 28/08/2007 22:54

what about a diesel focus ? or were you just considering the focus because someone you know can get you a good deal on a 1.8 petrol model ?

southeastastra · 28/08/2007 23:00

or a 1/6

NomDePlumeCantFindTheCatch · 28/08/2007 23:01

There isn't much in in it fuel economy-wise between the 1.6 & 1.8 afaik

LittleBella · 29/08/2007 06:19

Yes it was just that I have the chance of getting a petrol one very very cheap. I would like a diesel, most of my driving is motorway and I just liked having a diesel before because of being able to go for miles without thinking about whether I was running low on petrol. I seem to be permanantly worried about running out with this crappy matiz.

Love my one but I do find it's a bit of a gas guzzler. It's mostly used in town though. Definitely nippy and fun.

Don't know how the child lock works but thought I'd bump it for you for that question. And also to thank everyone for their opinions, I've decided against it, have decided I really want a diesel

I think if you open the door where the catch is on the side there is a metalflick thing that you push up to put the locks on.

southeastastra · 31/08/2007 11:09

yes you have to put the key in the rear door and turn it left to activate the child lock

We had a 1.8 Focus, an old one, S Reg. Got about 400 miles out of a full tank. It had done about 90K miles and still drove well with very few repairs needed.

dh has replaced it with a Renault which is big and tanky and keeps breaking. He got £1200 part ex for it.

I would have another one like a shot.

TigerFeet · 31/08/2007 11:18

Oh and the insurance wasn't too bad either, Group 6 or 7 iirc
