school shoes - need to be 'supportive"

OK - I need a opinions/knowledge please. I have always hated the big heavy shoes they sell you to send your child to school in. I hate heavy shoes myself and I don't see why they are a good idea for children. Mine wear light (but properly fitted) trainers all the time in the holidays and after school. I went shoe shopping with my 6 year old ds today and found a lovely pair of velcro "boating"type shoes in Russsel and Bromley. They are light and comfortable, fitted him perfectly, but the assistanf said she wouldn't recommend them for school because they weren't "supportive"enough. I bought them anyway - was I wrong? Have I condemned him to a life of bunions?

As long as they fit properly, I can't see the problem but I'm not an expert. Ds got his new ones today and they're an adult size 11. (faint...). They really are the definition of clumpy

Don't you get bunions from tight fitting shoes?

dd intoes a little still so she needs some that fit her well around the ankle and instep to minimise it. Perhaps she felt they would n't stand up to the wear and tear and the leather soften too easily ?

I think we are all a bit brainwashed about shoes. Barefoot is best. Shoes should be worn for protection from stones, glass etc.
As long as they are secure when running about in the playground I agree with your choice.
