Can anyone tell me anyhting baout these please?

For years we have been receiving requests for playstations/nintendo thingys and have stalled so far but if my understanding is right a Nintendo WI could be a compromise.

is it a stand alone thing? ie. you don't need a play station or a nintendo to use it?

are all the games/activites the active type?

what are the pros/cons of it?

do you need a fair bit of empty space in front of the TV?

any other useful info that wll help us make our minds uop??

thnak you.

It is a stand alone console. A lot of the games are active ones but there are also some which aren't, you still usually point at the screen and do other things rather than the traditional way other consoles work. I think it's very good as you can get the old games for it as well and is good for all the family. It's tiny so doesn't require much space, there is also a strip thing that sits in front of the tv to pick up the movements of the remote but that's not big either.

I think Wii is brilliant. My dh has every console (ps1,2,3 xbox, game cube, snes, psp, ds) and the wii is really the only one that anyone plays with. Lots of different types of games. I play it and I have never been interested in the other consoles. My 3yr old plays golf on it. You can make the players look like you which the kids love. I feel that it is much more of a 'whole family' activity than other consoles although you can still play individually. Even my mam plays it.
Cons are you can ruin the carpet in front of the tv and your house gets filled up with neighbours kids.

There is an excercise game on it where it can sense your movements and tell you is your doing it right. I think that one comes with a thing that measures body fat and tells you if you're getting fitter. Nintendo seem to have games with a wider appeal than just fighting/football.

BTW I know my dh is ludicrous having all those consoles but I have no control over him.

Its fab. In the past we have had playstation1 and xbox and they left me cold.
The wii is top family entertainment - we all play it and it is hilarious. Also much less sedentary than traditional compouter consoles.
You need a shoebox or similar for the handsets. The box itself is about the size of a paperback book/video cassette box and the remote thingy which sits on the TV is hardly noticeable.
You do need a reasonble space to play in - we always move our coffee table and that gives us plenty of movement space.
Can't recommend highly enough.

AuntyQuated · 21/08/2007 09:05

hmmm....the space could be an issue cos altho' our lounge is big we have one of these sitting in the middle of the room

our only other tv is high up on the kitchen wall

but other than that it sounds good

Good value too - for c£200 you will get console, sport games pack (bowling, tennis, boxing, golf, baseball) and one handset. Games are about £40 each I think. This compares to something ridiculous like £450 for the new playstation.
The only prob is there is a shortage - you may need to go on a waiting list as they are so popular.

missgriss · 21/08/2007 09:08

I love the Wii. It's great fun.

What is the name of the game that measures the bodyfat? It sounds intriguing...

Charlee · 21/08/2007 09:08

We have a Wii and they are fab.

It is stand alone all youi need is the console and a t.v to play it.

The games are great they get you really moving, and they are simple for kids to enjoy i.e tenniss, bowling ect.

They are tiny but you do need a reasonable space in front of the t.v to play some games.

You can connect it to the internet and use it as an internet browser.

Slouchy · 21/08/2007 09:09

Nice table!
can you shove it to the side when plahing?

FrogPrincess · 21/08/2007 09:11

dd (8) got a wii for her birthday, it is great fun and got her interested in new sports (she wants to learn tennis for real now)
It is a family game as well and her firends love it
Much better than sitting playing with a nintendi ds or some such....
And I love it too

FrogPrincess · 21/08/2007 09:12

'scuse the typing....

AuntyQuated · 21/08/2007 09:12

no 'shoving to the side' i'm afraid...tis really heavy.
need to look into getting a tv for the conservatory i think

That table is almost exactly the same as mine but mines from Cotswold and you can't just shove it over. You need a small team of men and a crane. Ours is shoved over permenantly because there was no room for anything else. I am hoping to shove it into dh office soon (his spending is not restricted to games consoles, We have quite a collection of oversized furniture)

The excercise thing is called Wii fit. I've seen it advertised but I don't know if its out yet

AuntyQuated · 21/08/2007 09:49

that Wii fit looks fab. i can't find out when it is released tho'.

OP posts:
nutcracker · 21/08/2007 09:51

Apparently wii fit should be released in time for xmas. I hope it is because I want it as a pressie lol.

We love our wii, the kids are never still when they are on it, and it is such a good laugh.

RubberDuck · 21/08/2007 10:45

So ... given that I really want to buy one of these for the whole family this Christmas - what month do I need to order it in to guarantee we have one around December time?

(also bearing in mind that if we buy too early we'll give up all pretence that it's for Christmas and use it straight away...)

AuntyQuated · 21/08/2007 11:41

i was thinking the same RD
could get it now and hide it but then you are wasting months of guarntee

OP posts:
moljam · 21/08/2007 11:44

oooh im glad to read this.dd and ds have been playing on friends and ive been thinking xmas as joint pressie.

PopsP · 21/08/2007 16:37

I would really reccomend getting one, they are great fun for the whole family.
I would suggest getting a 2nd (or 3rd or 4th) remote control, so the children don't have to keep taking it off their wrist.
I know WII's were in short supply earlier, but I think the supply is O.K now. The shops normally put together some good packages for Christmas so I would leave it until early October to see whats on offer. GAME & HMV are worth considering as they have loyalty points programs, which are worth joining as you will be spending about £200.

magnolia1 · 21/08/2007 16:51

Its fantastic, dh and the kids got me one for my birthday. We have the wii sports, wii play and big brain academy. We laugh so much and the kids love the tennis and the boxing. The boxing never fails to bring me out in a sweat

I think you will be ok in time for Xmas if you leave it until October but I wouldn't wait longer than half way through November just in case.

Fangzooki · 21/08/2007 16:54

The main problem we have with our Wii is that I sulk when I can't beat my ds (4yrs) at ANY of the sport games......

Seriously though it is fab. V good for exercising small boys when the weather is crap.

Littlefish · 21/08/2007 17:09

I just walked into Comet and bought one. No waiting list or anything. I would also recommend buying an extra handset (about £30) so that you can play tennis and boxing against each other.

I bought it for dh's 39th birthday. It's fabulous. Word of warning - my arm aches like mad after playing the bowling game for about 3 solid hours last night!

Ceebee74 · 21/08/2007 17:13

Definitely recommend one - we also just went into Argos and bought one (about 2 months ago now) off the shelf (so to speak).

I love the Brain Academy - me and DH sit and play against each other for hours once DS is in bed (he is too young to play on it just yet). However DH always sulks cos he is yet to beat me
