Curry's sold us a faulty washing machine 3 weeks ago and now won't give us a replacement

The guarantee says that they will give a full refund or replace it within 30 of installation if it goes wrong.

They are trying to say they won't do this and have taken the receipt off my mum and won't give it back to her. They are saying Indesit needs to come and repair it.

What should I do next? Trading standards?

What is the fault? Have you tried calling the repair number on the website?

slipperywhensparticus · 18/11/2019 18:15

Did ypu pay by cash or card,? Head office and customer services

Moomin8 · 18/11/2019 18:30

Card. Their own policy states that they will give a full refund within 30 days for anything faulty. If you let them send an engineer to fix it you are essentially saying that you accept the goods in whatever condition they are in. 2 weeks in we should not be having problems .

You can try charge back on your card, slightly more tricky (but still possible) with a debit card than credit, but still completely doable.

Majorcollywobble · 18/11/2019 18:35

Contact the bank . Even at night there will be an advisor who can help . It’s outrageous they have kept the receipt .

rslsys · 18/11/2019 18:39

You have a statutory right to return and be refunded on faulty goods, no matter what the retailer says!

@iamNOTmagic if you do this, you are essentially saying that you accept the goods in the condition they are in for the price you paid.

Who's the manufacturer? Indesit?

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 18/11/2019 19:57

AO did something similar, they need the engineer to confirm it's faulty, you however do not have to agree to the engineer fixing it if you would prefer a replacement or alternative.

Do in our case, engineer came, turned the oven on, confirmed that after 10 mins it wasn't getting hit. Packed up his stuff, left and submitted a report saying it was faulty. We then got AO to order an alternative make and arrange delivery, installation and removal at no extra cost.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 18/11/2019 19:57

Eurgh, autocorrect.

Do = So
Hit = hot

Moomin8 · 18/11/2019 20:00

Yes the manufacturer is Indesit.

Following with interest! I bought a Hoover washer/dryer from Currys 2 weeks ago which won't dry. Have an engineer coming out later this week so will see what he says and if needs be get a new machine sorted with them.

SexlessBoulderBelly · 18/11/2019 20:02

If you’re refusing an engineer to come and fix it, or authorise a replacement... it sounds to me like your just after a refund and to keep the item Hmm

Moomin8 · 18/11/2019 20:02

What they told us was that it would have to be fixed. Which clearly is not right. I've contacted trading standards. They've said within 30 days we don't have to accept a repair or an engineer coming out and advised me to write a letter saying we want a refund which we're entitled to.

OP posts:
Moomin8 · 18/11/2019 20:04

Actually @SexlessBoulderBelly what we wanted is a replacement. But now we will ask for a refund. Why should we take a chance on an item which may or may not keep on going wrong when we've had it two weeks??

So Hmm to you

OP posts:
Moomin8 · 18/11/2019 20:05

And no I don't want to keep the item - it makes an unearthly screaming sound every time I use it.

This. Your statutory rights trump the shops policy.

You do not have to accept a repair (or even their offer to try to repair it), you are well within your rights to ask for a refund or replacement as it’s not fit for purpose.

Currys are the worst. I just had a nightmare trying to get a fridge replaced by them, it took two months and ten attempts before we got a replacement. And countless hours of hassle and phone calls and waiting around.

In the end I tweeted TeamKnowhow and emailed the chief exec, that got a swift response. Wish I’d done it weeks ago. They also have offered some money back as compensation which I have yet to receive...
