I'm trying to think of things for DS's Christmas. Can anyone give me some info if this is suitable for a 5 year old. He's got a leapster but has never had a proper games thingy. Would I be better getting him a gameboy to begin with (if still available).

Ds is going to 8 in Feb and has played on my ds Will be getting him one for christmas this year. For his 5th xmas pres he got the large playmobil castle which he still plays with.

We have a playstation but is in lounge (no tvs allowed upstairs) and his playtime is monitored and limited on it so no problems. I personally think 5 is a little young for ds or similar of their own.

Ds still plays with his playmobil castle and has lots of play value.

Will now get ds as it will be limited too and also we will play joint games too as can be linked up.

He also loves lego, meccano, kinex, pirate ship, noah ark (playmobil), dinosaurs, craft stuff.

I got him the roboraptor/reptile but to honest very limited play value there. Same with the dalek remote control.

I think I'd rather get the castle for him and it's great to hear your DS still plays with it. Thanks for the help.

I think some 5 year olds would enjoy it but I'd save it for an older child myself, just because a 5 year old will be satisfied with much less and they are v expensive.

gscrym · 18/08/2007 18:18

He sounds just like mine. He's sitting in his room listening to music and building some bizarre thing with lego.

The castle sounds great! I wish we'd had that.

gscrym · 18/08/2007 18:19

I agree about the cost. I shall stick with more toy-like pressies. I'm sure in years to come he'll be wanting more expensive things. I should just enjoy this stage a bit longer.

I posted a similar question a week or two ago. My DD is playing sometimes with her brothers so I think I will give it a go.I've had a look at the games and there are several that seem OK for her. It is for her birthday which is soon so I will let you know how it goes.

You should expect some plonker to post "have you not thought about going out or reading a book". I got one of those. Twit. She was a big advocate of reading but hadn't bothered to read the OP where I explained that DD was very active and busy and rounded....

I remember considering a nintendo ds when ds was 5 tho as his friends were getting them etc. Glad we have stuck with toys tho as is only now he is thinking of asking santa for nintendo ds (he said he wont ask me and dp as lots of money and doesnt want to ask for too much ).

Ds asked for playmobil noahs ark last year and i wasnt sure to get for his as thought maybe too young but he has enjoyed playing with it and the animals can invade the castle!

Managed to get the big castle for £70 from tyrells altho usually quite a bit more exp. Made sure he knew was from me and dp and he gets lots of smaller things from santa.

Made the mistake of getting the hotwheels t-rex.. takes up a lot of room!

Worm warriors was a good game, foam guns to shoot the worms down and very silly. Always tend to get some sort of game for him. Top trumps are good too.

I need to start thinking about xmas as baby due around then and will be a very busy time!

MamaMaiasaura · 18/08/2007 18:26

hope i am not a plonker re pagwatchs post

gscrym · 18/08/2007 18:26

One of the reasons I'd thought of it is DS can sometimes spend a while in the car. It'd keep him occupied. He also goes to the library every week so has a good interest in books. It's always easy to type something which you see as a throw away comment but may annoy or upset the person asking the question.

I think I'll go with the idea of it's to chuffin' expensive for DS to wedge in a toybox. His leapster gets flung of the bed regularly. I'll prob wait till he's more careful with toys.

Awen, you don't sound like a plonker, I'm getting some great ideas from you.

If you want something portable for games etc, why not consider a Tamagotchi? DD is 6.5 and got one a few months ago. She loves it, and it is great for car/airplane journeys. It's also fairly inexpensive - less than £15.

I'm sure at some point, I'll get dd a dslite. But completely agree with Scummy that it might be better to hold off on the expensive electronics until they're a bit older when they can enjoy it more.

MamaMaiasaura · 18/08/2007 18:28

I wish i had got ds a leapster tho, they look like lots of fun although think he is prob too old now hence prob games console soon. Could your ds have leapster in car?

My ds gets car sick so no point in me getting something for car and will prob puke over it.

pagwatch · 18/08/2007 18:32

No no no ! . Not plonker for helpful advice. I agree with your postings. Sorry !

I just had someone post with very pompous comments and no constructive advice. Just a little insinuation that I was someone who spent no time at all with DD and that DD was a little couch potato - which was quite rude.
You are not plonker at all !

gscrym · 18/08/2007 18:33

Yes he takes it in the car. I'm going to go with the playmobile idea I think. I'm going to steer clear of dinosaurs though, his room looks like Jurassic park.

pagwatch.. i know what you mean tho, someone always tend to post as holier than tho and hugely judgemental!

Ds bought some fab dinosaurs last week, the papo ones. A velocoraptor (sp) with moving jaw and a pteranodon (sp).

Space stuff is really cool too and playmobil do loads of diff stuff.
this site, the castle we got

My 6 year olds idea of heaven would be a nintendo ds lite or a nintendo wi - but I know he would turn into a total computer geek if I gave him the chance - so I am holding off until he begs.

He gets to go on the computer and play games and battle chess - as we went swimming this morning he got a huge two hour computer session this afternoon.
