more info please - age/weight of child/any types of style you like/don't?
(Or I can cut straight to What I Love )

I've got a 2 year old, my sister a small 10lb 12 week old and I plan to use one from birth with my next. Have looked at baba and hotslings online and like but unsure how easy to use. Would prefer one of the hippy variety iykwim rather than the front rug sack graco if that makes sense. But most important is ease of use and security. Also we both bf.

used/use and LOVE ring sling - suitable from newborn I think, but we didn't get til she was about 7 mths & still using with dd (16 mths) - some funky ones here www.sasaslings.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=2_4_29

And bumping so the corrie people see this!

Bigmama & sasaslings both hire out, if you want to try first...

In my opinion, a wrap is the most incredibly comfy and secure sling you can find, though it takes a few goes to figure out how to wear it. Mei tais are also secure and easy to use, though I'm not sure how good they are with tiny babies since I've only used one with my toddler. I find one-shouldered slings less secure; it's hard to bend over with a baby in them and you need to keep a free hand to grab them if they get wriggly. They're very quick to put a baby in and out of, though.

There are loads of places online where you can find good directions of how to use any kind of sling you care to name. Youtube has lots of demonstration videos, and www.thebabywearer.com is a really good site for information, so no matter what you get you should be able to figure out how to use it.

Thanks so much. Who are the corrie people? Are they attatchment parenting people - I did look for a thread to post on there but couldn't find one - if their is please point me in direction!

I love my Coorie and am not an AP
It just happens that my ds2 adores it...

Tigana · 15/08/2007 13:42

I had a moby wrap, one of those huge long strips of gently stretchy fabric, all sorts of different ways of wrapping inc a newborn/bf position iirc.
Didn't get it until ds was nearly 1yo and wish I had got a sling before he was born!!

ProfYaffle · 15/08/2007 13:45

I love my peerie which is a lightweight version of the coorie, fab for chucking in the changing bag. I found ring slings OK but a tad fiddly (although they do look amazing), with a pouch you just put it on and go although it's important to get the right size which is a pita when ordering online.

MrsBadger · 15/08/2007 13:47

DH wanted a peerie but couldn't be doing with flowers - got him a Hotsling in manly khaki and he loves it.

ProfYaffle · 15/08/2007 13:52

LOl, the peerie is mine, dh has a slightly less camp oatmeal colour.

NoviceKnitter · 15/08/2007 16:55

We have a Kari Me (wrap sling) which I've found a bit hot (for me and LO) during recent weeks and also a bit squashy for her - she and DP love it to bits tho - I would too but it makes me a bit paranoid about her being able to breath as she tends to snuggle right down. But I think I will love it for outings when she's a bit bigger (she's only 6 weeks) - it's very secure, comfy and distributes weight brilliantly - makes LO feel part of you again.

My DD likes to be held ALOT so a couple of weeks ago I invested in a coorie and a peerie (for hot weather) and they are BRILLIANT she and I both love them for around the house and short trips - much much quicker to get on and her in and out than the kari me. For longer walks if it wasn't too hot I'd still use the Kari Me.

I think the hiring idea is a really good one as the perfect sling is such a subjective thing...

We had an adjustable pouch sling from Kangaroo Korner which was fab, and you can choose different materials depending on climate and the colour / print you prefer. There is a lot of detail info on the website as to how to use and wear. I think they can be used from birth up to about 3 years old I think. We used ours from about 3 months.

They also do lots of other slings. It is an american company but they are very helpful and we have had to send something back and they were very prompt with replacement etc. A few friends have since used them and been very happy also.

Piffle · 15/08/2007 17:16

I started with the baby bjorn but ds2 hated it, bought a naturebaby plain cotton sling, he hated it, bought a kari me, he hated it.
Bought a Coorie and for the life of me I do not know why or even care as he is so happy in it.
I think it is the stretch in the fleece maybe?
But if he is crying in the car, we show him the sling and he stops, thats how much he loves it.
He is 5 mths btw

accessorizewithbabysick · 15/08/2007 18:36

I have a hotsling (the sweetpea design) which I have used every day since I got it - ds2 was 4 months. For something to just throw on, it can't be beat & he grins every time I put it on with excitement! However the fabric is a bit slippery, so I'd go for a different fabric style and I'd buy a peerie/coorie cos they're made here and not in the US. I wished I had bought mine earlier though, would be lovely with a newborn. And they're so fab when your toddler wants you to do something with him or you've got to drop him.her at nursery, don't want to carry teh car seat all the time etc.

NotADragonOfSoup · 15/08/2007 18:41

I made myself a fleece Coorie because I didn't believe it would work. It was fab. I went on to buy a Kimmer and a Peerie from the site ProfYaffle linked to, Brightsparks Slings. BabyDragon still goes in one at 18 months old.

NotADragonOfSoup · 15/08/2007 18:42

She went in it every day on the school run from birth Added bonus is that you can wriggle out of it leaving the baby asleep and also put them straight in/out of the carseat in it with minimal fiddling.

NotADragonOfSoup · 15/08/2007 18:43

(My Peerie is a nice blue striped one. Not a flower in sight Have to say I prefer the stretch of a coorie or Kimmer though)

barbamama · 15/08/2007 18:50

What size Coories have you all got? I'm still trying to work out whether my size 3 is too big or not - it is hard to tell with a massive bump.

Piffle · 15/08/2007 20:09

I'm 5ft 6 size 10 and my sz 2 is on the larger size of perfect
I agree school run simple with coorie
I have the stripes and I did buy a peerie with a view to summer but ds2 true to form hated that too.

barbamama · 16/08/2007 11:49

hmm I think I need to swap it for a size 2 too, thanks.

NoviceKnitter · 17/08/2007 14:53

I'm size 2 as well. agree coorie more snug than peerie but peerie good for when v v hot.

SabaSaba · 18/08/2007 12:46

Stretchy wrap like hug a bub or moby is good for tiny babies & comfortable and easy to use. From 3 months right up to toddlers I think Mei Tai`s are great, very secure, and suportive, Ive got a few MTs & wraps on for sale board, with pictures, if you want to take a look at different styles etc.
