Favorite Toy?

My DD is now 6 months old and has developed a strange obessesion for remote controls over almost all of her toys.

So much so that we have given her and old remote from a duff HiFi that has been baby proofed as much as is humanly possible.

It was either this or have the ones for the TV etc. drooled on a lot.

Has anyone else had this problem or had to give thier child a strange toy?

My dd carried a doorbell around for a month (still packaged), that was succeded by a blue paintbrush.

Yes, we donated a spare remote control to our dd at that age. Stickers off clothes or cds. Sticking them from one hand to another. At 10 mths (and 3 full toy boxes) her favorite toy is now a aluminium oven tray that she scrunches and it doubles as a hat for all of us providing loads of entertainment.

DS has the same remote control obsession - although he seems to think it's a mobile phone as he holds it up to his ear and talks to it! He also loves the brass pans from my weighing scales, the coffee grinder and our pepper mill. Obviously a budding gourmet.

DS also loved remote controls and telephones/mobiles. And like GillW's DS could not tell them apart. Now at 18 months he's fairly much got them all sussed. We gave him an old mobile phone but he's not that impressed. Be thankful though GillW - my DS thought that my packet of contraceptive pills were a telephone and went through a phase of routing through my drawers for them and then wandering around holding them to his ear!

My ds also loves remotes. My dh is a bit of a control freak about things like that, so they are always whisked away very quickly, and hidden out of sight!

At my mum's ds's favourite 'toy' is a custard tin, which he loves rolling. He also played happily with a couple of old wooden spoons and some Christmas pudding microwavable tubs at my Auntie's house. Makes you wonder why you spend good money buying toys doesn't it?!

Kitchen roll inner cardboard rolls are goog too!

Oh, yes, the remote control obsession. Always semms to affect the baby in the house...

The remote control fixation has got my youngest too, but seems preferable somehow to the fixation of his older brother (aged 3 1/2) who currently likes to wander around with his sister's barbie handbag concealing a cap gun, while wearing my shoes and telling anyone who listens that he is going to be a giant when he grows up so he can squash everyone!!

It's only adults who classify items into toys and non-toys. If a child shows an interest, then absolutely anything can be a toy and of entertainment!!

At my ds and dd's nursery, they have a box of old mobile phones and remote controls for the older babies to play with. Looks a bit bizarre when you first see them, but the children love it.

My dd loves to play with a page torn out of the Radio Times; books and other types of loose paper just don't have the same effect!

Yes, the remote control passion is well-documented - both mine (aged 1 and 3) can operate the TV and video with it! The phone is also popular, sometimes I discover one of them has actually rung a real person up which can be embarrassing. My DS (3) also loves the hoover and whenever I am using it (not so very often..) grabs one of the tools and helps mummy clean up. You can buy a toy Dyson, but I say, give him the real thing and get him cleaning! (just kidding)

Clary my DS gets hyper on the rare occasions he sees the vacuum cleaner. He also loves to hold the dust pan while I have the brush to sweep the kitchen floor. But tries to sweep with it.

Unfortunately he also saw me clean the toilets the other week - I normally do this when he's in bed so it was a major novelty. So on Sunday morning I got out of bed to find him sat legs apart on the bathroom floor spraying himself with bathroom cleaner. Then we found him playing with the drawing pins. Then a dangerous part came off his zoo truck. Then he fell out of the back door. And this was all by 11 am.

Walked into the bathroom the other day to find dd (2) 'playing daddy' and shaving her chin with dh's razor.

Watering can was DS's favourite from about 9-14 months.

DD (now 11 months) is very keen on stones & anything else she can use like a dummy (I've never given her a dummy).

Both my kids love the Dyson, too. Big duster, trolleys, any stick.... they have their own disused computer keyboards, too.

Sticks...don't get me started on sticks as an endless source of entertainment. If both my children grow up with both their eyes I'll be amazed.

My ds was so interested in anything 'sticky' from the radio arial to drinking straws and waved everything so close to his eyes we refer to them all as his 'pokey straw' 'pokey stick' 'pokey spoon' etc. He also loves all phones and remotes. Why do they make children's toys in bright colours when they so clearly prefer matt black and silver?

When mine was little, he preferred looking at the real TV to looking at his toy TV/mobile!
The price we paid for it, a portable might have been more of an investment!

My DS Charlie is fascinated with the toilet brush. Found him licking the wrong end of it yesterday, so have had to put it in the one place he can't reach - the bathroom window ledge. Looks great from the neighbours' gardens!
He loves the phone too, but as he's dialled 999 twice we've had to put the phone 3 feet off the floor.

Oh yuck!

My 9 month old DS who has just started crawling is obsessed with radiators (which luckily arent on yet) and the on-off knobs on the end - which in our house are slightly broken so come off all the time!

DS (19 months) did have an obsession with the hoover until it fell over and now is scared of the thing - still likes the mini hoover and attachments though. Again, remotes/mobiles feature heavily. Does love 2 cuddlies - a yellow duck and a pink (!) teddy that I had when I was born. Loves playing with water.
