I had my heart set on a Yaris, but the Clio is so undermilaged. The Clio is also cheaper and I feel that it's the sensible choice. My only reservation is that I'm learning is a car which has a gearbox which isn't fully automatic (can't remember what it's called) which means that if you're on an incline, it will roll backwards, rather than pull forwards or stay where it is, which is what a fully automatic will do. I'm used to the version that rolls, and therefore hill starts are necessary. As a concept, I think it's better to have a car that will pull forwards in that situation, but it's not what I'm used it. The Yaris does what I'm used to, but the Clio doesn't.

Which would you go for?

Advice I read, from the automobile association in my country (NZ) is that you should buy the newest model car you can afford, and not to be particularly concerned about mileage, as modern cars are made to do a lot of miles. But there's not a huge amount in it age-wise, between the two cars, so I suppose there won't be a massive difference in that regard.
Another important factor is service history. A well serviced and maintained car, is your best bet, I think. Are you able to see a service record for these cars?

Just to add, I used to have a Yaris as a work car and really liked it. From the amount of branded Yaris' I see on the road in my city, they seem to be one of the most popular models for work cars here, so I'm guessing they're considered very reliable and cost effective to drive.

I am no car expert but Toyota have ana excellent reputation and Renault far less so so I think I would go yaris

I would go for the Yaris, Clios are hit and miss (more miss)

Yaris do will in safety ratings.

I am looking at small cars for DD - Yaris comes up as a good car, Clio does not...

I've not opened the links. Buy the Toyota. I wouldn't have even test driven the Renault.
