Vauxhall mokka

DH seems to have his heart set on a Vauxhall mokka. Can anyone recommend one of these? Have you had any problems with the turbo engine?

Have you considered euthanasia?

It's a touch extreme, but setting your heart on a Mokka is a sign that somethings not quite right.

Both engines have a turbo but the petrol is the best choice.

Definitely not a car to buy new unless you're getting a massive discount as the second hand value of them is very low.

Madmog · 12/09/2019 16:29

IWouldPreferNotTo Thanks for your reply. It is a petrol and second hand. Hope you don't mind me asking, but are your comments based on appearance/reliability/other?

We're not worried about appearance, reliability (factored with cost as this is an unexpected change of car) is more important. There's also an Astra at the garage, but the Mokka was more comfortable. Generally we'd be making short journeys, but occasionally 650 miles over two days.

I also liked the look of them, when they first came out so I test drove a 1.7. I found it really cramped in the front and I’m a 5ft 4 size 12.
The engine was also very noisy on the 70 mph duel carriage way.
Needless to say I didn’t get one.

sunshine5997 · 12/09/2019 17:50

Most horrendous car I Have ever had. Would of rather had a penny fathering than that car!

IWouldPreferNotTo · 12/09/2019 17:59

I'll start off with the blanket reason.

Why on earth would anyone buy a Vauxhall?

Every other brand has a certain quality. For example reliability, handling, design flair, cheapness

Vauxhall has none of this. They're just a big steaming pile of mediocrity bodged together by a US firm which relies on government handouts.

This is not the 80s when they were the rep mobile of choice. If a rep turned up in a Vauxhall you'd wonder if the firm would still be in business in six months.

The Vauxhall Corsa exists purely because people want a small car but their budget doesn't extend to a reliable Japanese brand.

Now let's get onto the Mokka. I'm not going to make a big deal of the styling which is just bland, you either like it or you don't. What I'm going to poke at is the fact that they've taken a small hatchback and inflated it. The car looks like it should be a motorway cruiser but it isn't, the engine is noisy and the whole experience is noisy.

It has less boot space (200L less) than a Peugot 308 which is a small hatchback.

The engine is literally not designed for the car, GM pulled out of the parts bin an engine designed for a subcompact to tempt the Euro market with economy and the power figure listed is only at the top of the rev range. So you're revving the bollocks off this engine and killing fuel economy in the hope that the car might not be slower than a drugged up sloth.

DONT BUY A VAUXHALL EVER.

We have an I'll faited zafirra. You know the ones that explode. Vauxhall have behaved attrotiously. In our first year of ownership we didn't use it for several months, over the summer, when it had been our specific plan buying it to drive it to France.

We were told it was fixed only to get a phone call 2 month's later saying they'd forgotten to do the fix only serviced it. Not that that mattered as that was failed fix no.1.

Another long delay between recall 2 and fix 2.

Now we're on recall 3 - for the same issue.

Our eldest is disabled and has mobility issues, can't get in and out the car himself. The third recall trying to fix the exploding means he now refuses to go out in the car (also Autistic so once hes really taken against something hes hard to move) We no longer have a family car.

I contacted Vauxhall to try to reject the car as not fit for purpose considering they keep trying to fix it as a death trap. They bounced me to Lookers Vauxhall, who we purchased the car from. They told me once you've driven it away pretty much tough.

It's been such a fowl experience I'd strongly advise not dealing with vauxhalls

PaddyF0dder · 12/09/2019 18:14

Can’t speak for the Mokka. But we’ve got a Vauxhall and will never buy one again. Terrible build quality, unreliable, lots of repairs, and feels cheap and tacky.

Never again.

lovelyupnorth · 12/09/2019 20:32

It’s a Corsa and shit

Have you considered divorce.

lovelyupnorth · 12/09/2019 20:42

To be fair had a Zafira for 9 years and had no issues. Was cheap and went well. But still wouldn’t choose a Vauxhall.

bluebellation · 12/09/2019 20:46

We had a Mokka for a couple of years - never again! Unreliable, clunky, lack of oomph. I wouldn't write off all Vauxhalls as we had a really good Astra for several years, but step away from the Mokka!

LemonWaterDuck · 12/09/2019 20:50

I hated the mokka! Cramped, horrible to drive, the kids always moaned it was super uncomfy in the back. I do not recommend.

C0untDucku1a · 12/09/2019 20:51

I had an astra a few years ago when my bmw was being fixed and i loved it. But i only had it a week.

My dad has had corsas since he has retired and loves them. He often drives me to work in the snow when i can’t get off my street. No issues in 15 years going through country roads in snow in the corsa. But anything is better than a bmw in snow!

lovelyupnorth · 12/09/2019 20:54

Anything with small wheels is good in the snow.

FaithInfinity · 12/09/2019 20:54

DH had a choice of Vauxhall’s for work. We looked at the Mokka, everyone else chose the insignia and he wanted to be different. We looked in the boot and changed our minds! Tiny! My old polo had more room! The insignia wasn’t great. It kept alarming that the tyres had lost pressure (to 0). Never really got it sorted. I wouldn’t chose to buy one.

Walnutwhipster · 12/09/2019 20:57

Vauxhall build quality is horrendous. I had a brand new Zafira. It was a piece of shit. I only kept it 18 months but would have got rid of it after a month if I could.

saywhatwhatnow · 12/09/2019 21:05

We had a Mokka and had serious problems with it, one involved us getting stranded in central France with our 9 week old baby. Opal 'fixed it' after a week and we drove home to England only to be told it wasn't safe! I felt horrific as they then told us the fumes had been coming back into the car, I would never have put my baby in it if I'd known. Awful customer to top it off. Couldn't wait to hand it back! Never again!

Madmog · 13/09/2019 12:47

Thanks for your replies everyone, ended up being helpful, we're going to look at other options. We've had our present car for two years and had nothing but problems, recently resulting in a bill of £900. Our garage suggested the dealer sort it and it took them three weeks. Cars are going to have problems at some point, but there's a limit.

My suggestion based on a £6000-£8000 budget and wanting a reliable car that's family friendly.

Toyota Avensis (Saloon or Estate)
Hyundai i30
Honda CR-V

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 13/09/2019 13:43

@IWouldPreferNotTo Grin brilliant review! Can you review a Nissan Juke for me?

IWouldPreferNotTo · 13/09/2019 14:48

@GiveMyHeadPeaceffs

By Nissan Juke are you referring to the every so slightly larger Micra that Nissan have made to tempt people who think buying a turmeric latte from Cafe Nero makes them a bit hip. Yes, you know, people who think that hip is still an adjective used by anyone under 50.

What really sets the Juke apart was Nissan's attempt to get rid of their image of making bland reliable cars by introducing a CVT gearbox so unreliable that it's the cause of a class action lawsuit. Most companies try to bring in some design flair or great handling to offset their dismal reliability (we're looking at you Alfa Romeo) but Nissan tried something a bit different.

Fair enough. This is not an SUV, it's a sensible urban car with some chunky styling cues. We'll ignore the fact that the styling means that visibility is significantly reduced when parking, because the car just looks so imposing. Well, if you think that a dog with a swollen face after eating a bee looks imposing.

No problem just don't park, you can sit in comfort in your new car and just drive forwards. Well apart from the fact that the seat has limited positions and the roof is rather low, so you'd better be exactly the same height as the person they designed it for.

After making it to the shops you can enjoy the massive boot space which is easily 20% more than a Micra, the well known gold standard of boot space. I just hope everything you're buying is nice and small as the styling means that it can be a bit hard to fit things in.

At the end of the day being the basic bitch of the car world seems to work as they're an incredibly successful car.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 13/09/2019 16:37

@IWouldPreferNotTo brilliant! I was hoping for smaller than my current tank of a Peugeot 3008 but slightly bigger than my previous Mini...I see a Juke may not be the way to go. You should write reviews for a living (please say you do!)

@IWouldPreferNotTo

Great appraisal of the Juke! However, for completeness, fairness and accuracy it's not strictly fair to imply that it is a Micra in all but name. The Micra is based on the Nissan-Renault B platform whereas the Juke actually uses the slightly stretched B0 platform... which is coincidentally the basis of the Dacia Sandero/Logan/Duster, the latter of which is actually a far superior and cheaper vehicle if you need a SUV.

pumkinspicetime · 18/09/2019 16:51

Family member says" bad coffee, bad car" every time they see one.
To be fair they aren't wrong.

Lulu2106 · 18/09/2019 17:00

I've got one of these cars now, nightmare! Also they are so uncomfortable, recently went on a long drive to south of France in the Mokka, it was awful, there's no space inside the car or the boot and the actual seats are sooo uncomfortable to drive for a long time. Also have the 1.6 and the petrol just disappears! Best to stay away. Good luck with your search.
