Thinking of getting a trail gator for ds's bike, any pros and cons?

Ds1 is 6 and can ride without stabilisers but isn't great still on hills or long distances. Does anyone else use a trail gator bar to attach child's bike. Just wondering what the stability would be like etc. We would be mostly using it on cycle trails around forest parks or lanes.
Thanks!

We have one to pull dd (age 4.5) It is very stable, and would be absolutely fine on the cycle trails you describe.

Happy cycling!

ps - dh has just said it is one of the best purchases he ever made!!

i am thinkin of one of these to

are they easy to take on and off if want to cycle a bit?

Fennel · 09/08/2007 21:08

We have one, it's stable enough. Very easy to use and then fold away. You fold them up butg leave them on the bike, a bit like a telescope.

I have been wondering about this for when DS is a bit older.

Could you detach them mid-cycle iyswim?

We have a cycle route from our house to a large park which is mainly off road, but to get onto the cycle path we have to go through a series of metal bars which are there to block cars.

I can't see how we would get through them except if we could easily detach & reattach DS' bike.

We just bought one last week and used it for the first time at the weekend with our 4.5 yr old and it was fab! We didn't go off road however but will be trying that soon.

HTH!

NannyL · 09/08/2007 21:46

My boss uses one for my large 4 year old charge.

They LOVE it, find it really easy to use... they go for lots of weekend cycle rides... 4 year old normally rides there and trail gators back!

They are reallY impressed with theirs!

NannyL · 09/08/2007 21:47

i think you can easily attacht and reattach the bike from the trailgator

IsabelWatchingItRainInMacondo · 09/08/2007 21:47

Where can I get one?

snowwonder · 09/08/2007 21:47

ok great advice now we need to know the cheapest place to buy one from????

StarryStarryNight · 09/08/2007 21:48

We bought ours in Halfords.

StarryStarryNight · 09/08/2007 21:50

You can go offroad too!

My husband has our 5 year old on his bike attached with the tailgator, and the toddlers trailer attached to our sons bike, so my husband trails them both, extra 50 kg load, good exercise, lol!

IsabelWatchingItRainInMacondo · 09/08/2007 21:52

Thank you.

NannyL · 09/08/2007 21:53

my boss always liks the best deal...

i know he got a bargain from somehwere online but i dont know where, sorry!

It was quiet a bit cheaper than in shops though, so i was told!

FrayedKnot · 09/08/2007 21:55

oooh look

flip up stabilizers would be brilliant for DS

I reckon we could get him going with this next year

aintnomountainhighenough · 09/08/2007 21:57

We bought ours from discount bicycles, they had it on offer and we paid about 35quid however just looked and they are now 50 quid.

NannyL · 09/08/2007 22:08

my 4 year old has flip up stabilisers too! they are fab!

Fennel · 10/08/2007 09:31

We bought ours from an Ebay shop, it was new but about £35, compared to £50 or £70 in our local shops.

As the others say it's very easy to attach the bike for just part of the ride, we particularly use it when our 4yo gets tired towards the end of a ride, we just hook her up at that point.

meandmyflyingmachine · 10/08/2007 09:36

Oh yes. We have one. Also bought from discount bicycles. It is fab. On the instructions, it does say it must only be used on the flat, but dh and ds regularly go whizzing off road and haven't come a cropper yet .

Very easy to put on and off. Ds only goes on at the end - or up particularly long hills.
