Why do shops do this?

There used to be a separate branch of Next in my town selling only childrenswear. They have now closed this down and moved the childrenswear UPSTAIRS in the adults shop. There is no lift and when I queried if this was legal in terms of the disability discrimination act (not to mind inconvenient for parents) I was told it was a listed building and they weren't allowed to put in a lift. I wouldn't mind but you would never know it was a listed building as internally it is totally modern!

Also, when I had my first daughter our local Boots had a great baby section, with clothes and toys and special staff who could give advice. Over the years the baby stuff is being squeezed into smaller and smaller spaces at the back of the shop. When they started stocking clothes and toys again last year, they put them upstairs in a different section. OK there is a lift but I've never seen anyone up there when I've ventured up so they can't do much business plus who wants to queue up twice to pay?

Are we just unlucky here or are all the high street stores planned by someone who is clearly not a parent? (And don't get me started on M&S not having any sweet-free checkouts!!)

Pabla - Children's wear in our main Next is also upstairs, with no lift access. Luckily we do have a separate children's Next as well round the corner - but even that hsas a step to access it.

Ooh, maybe I should take a visit to all these stores with ds2 in his wheelchair, and see what they say when I need to go up/downstairs then? I would be only too happy to make a loud and forceful protest on your behalves
