We got one from BAC - a national franchise, it was hardwood, ready painted, and though not cheap everyone admired it. They also fitted our windows but they were UPVC and fairly ordinary.

Thank you KarenG. When you say not cheap what sort of figure do you mean? If that's not too cheeky And what colour did you choose?

Anyone else?

They have quite a range in B&Q warehouse & I don't think they're over-expensive.

Who would fit it though? DIY or a little man?

WendyWeber · 06/08/2007 20:08

here

What I want is one of these - they look sort of like painted wood, I've no idea what composite is exactly (prob plastic but you never have to paint them )

BettySpaghetti · 06/08/2007 20:08

Magnet, builders merchants (Travis Perkins, Buildbase, Bradfords etc), Wickes

Bouquetsofdynomite · 06/08/2007 20:11

Composite are supposed to brill in terms of looking convincing, security and draftfreeness but I think you're talking about £1000 from what I remember of an old thread.

Tinker · 06/08/2007 20:19

Yes, teh composite doors look interesting but what if you get bored of teh colour? And all teh others need a joiner since would then need all the glazing round the door to be done as well. Plus, would have to really like the stained glass - some looks not nice

What I really want, of course, is the original door [sob]

Found this site here which says that their doors are wooden but no prices givem

I think you're right, Bod! The doors alone are £600 on that site, and we'd need a new frame too (which I hope would help hold the house up as it's very wonky) plus fitting.

But we've had the same crappy old 60s front door for nearly 25 years and I want a nice one!

WendyWeber · 06/08/2007 20:22

Have you tried a salvage yard, Tink? You're supposed to be able to get a door in the right style but a bit bigger than your opening, and then have it trimmed to fit.

Tinker · 06/08/2007 20:24

I've looked on ebay for original doors but still teh hassle of fitting etc. Oh, I don't know. It won't get done for years anyway

Have to agree with wendy, a salvage yard is by far the cheapest option. And you will probably end up with a really classy door, if you are clever enough to 'do it up' yourself. Remember to be careful if you have to strip lead paint tho.

WendyWeber · 06/08/2007 20:25

period interiors

rantinghousewife · 06/08/2007 20:30

Really like those Art Nouveau doors.

Tinker · 06/08/2007 20:31

Ooo, nice site but in Hartlepool...

Bouquetsofdynomite · 06/08/2007 20:33

Aw I feel bad now, it's the original 100yr old door I want to replace! It just doesn't feel secure, it's very drafty and I worry about the glass falling out on me (happened to my sis with an identical door.)
Does anyone know if anything could be done with it (on site obviously)? KarenG's site has doubleglazed hardwood doors and superduper locking systems and they do it all for you - I'm tempted but wondering how close it comes to composite prices.

WendyWeber · 06/08/2007 20:34

There will be places like it in Manc though, even if they don't have websites.

Me too, rh! Nearly all the glazed doors there are for vestibules, we have a cheap imitation Victorian one in ours and I would love one of the fancy ones

Tinker · 07/08/2007 10:13

True

Got the brochure through today for the one linked to and they look quite impressive. No price list though

Just got quotes from BAC: £3658 for their solid wood ones and £2141 for the composite version. 2 panes in the door plus window above.
Think we'll have a closer look at B&Q then.
