Alternatives to clingflim

WLmum · 24/08/2019 07:31

Does anyone have any suggestions for good alternatives to cling film. I try hard to be eco and reduce reuse recycle wherever I can and focus on the consumption of plastics, however the one thing I always get stuck in is clingfilm. I tried bee wraps but they didn't last very long and weren't air tight enough for the dc sandwiches which ended up with very hard crusts.
Most grateful for any recommendations.

I use;

Beeswax wraps
Greasproof Paper.
Stasher Bags
Silicon Lids

I cant seem to link but Amazon supply both of the last two items.
You can refresh you Beeswax Wraps yourself.

For sandwiches you could reuse packaging like bread bags or cereal box inners, or buy a good quality airtight box (still plastic but not single use and should last for years)

BikeRunSki · 24/08/2019 07:52

What do you use it for? I’ve never bought it, or felt the need.

Sandwhiches go in foil or a Tupperware type box.
Leftovers go in the fridge with a plate on as a lid, or Tupperware type box.

You can buy (or make, if you have a sewing machine) reusable wraps for sandwiches. They are fabric on one side with a sewn in plastic liner which wipes clean. You fold them around the food and close with Velcro tabs. Look at "roll and eat sandwich wraps" on amazon for the idea.

WLmum · 24/08/2019 09:58

Thank you, I'll check out amazon.
I use them for dc and dh sandwiches mainly. The bee wraps were expensive and didn't do well enough for sandwiches.
I've never thought plastic tubs would do for sandwiches but I'm sure that's silly so I'll check out some sarnie sized ones.
Leftovers always go in reusable dishes/tubs.

Just used beeswax wraps for first time this week. Worked a treat - highly recommend.

Bubblysqueak · 24/08/2019 09:59

I just use Tupperware boxes or reuse the plastic takeaway containers sandwiches never dry out.

icklekid · 24/08/2019 10:00

Yeah just use plastic tubs much easier to clean if messy sandwich fillings too!

Pixilicious · 24/08/2019 10:05

I use these for sandwiches. Or tinfoil.

Yeah Tupperware boxes are good, reusable and sandwiches don’t get squashed

TyneTeas · 24/08/2019 10:10

These are brilliant for sandwiches. Mine has had daily use for over 18 months and as strong as on day one. Keeps sandwiches nice and fresh too

DH uses this for sandwiches groceries.asda.com/product/lunch-boxes-bags/sistema-bento-lunch/1000015780878
Picked it up for a fiver from one of the supermarkets. It fits two sandwiches (4 slices of bread) plus tubs for fruits / yoghurt etc. Even the longer breads like Warburton's fits perfectly with no squashing

bonzo77 · 24/08/2019 10:21

For sandwiches I re-use packaging from other things like frozen veg, bread and cereal. The bags from peas seem particularly good and can be used many times after a rinse.

SlumdogMummy · 24/08/2019 10:27

The re-wrap wrappers are great. They velcro means they adapt and can do bread, rolls, bagels etc. DH thought they were such a good idea that he now has one too!

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 24/08/2019 10:27

I cut sandwiches in half, put one half on top of the other and carry them in an empty Flora Light spread tub. No additional plastic needed.

Thanks all. I found a couple do sistema ones pixilicious half price in Tesco last night. Score! Secondary school age dd would not take sandwiched in a pea bag (I would) but she approved of her new sarnie box. Thanks all.
