Like the look of them but just wondering what they are really like, pluses and minuses please.

hhhmm, me too. Do the extra 2 seats fold flat into the boot when not needed?

unicorn · 18/09/2004 19:35

Not really sure, but think it may be a car on our test drive list (just had a go at the zafira- wasn't keen)

We've had ours since January and had a number of problems initially.

  1. The CD player packed up within 3 weeks and it took 6 weeks to replace.
  2. The milo was out so the trip had to be reset (maybe incorrect terminology but involved computer download for a couple of hours). As a result it looks as though we've covered more miles than we have.
  3. Problem with silvering in headlamp which was eventually replaced but only after stamping foot loudly.

It is however a very comfy ride and a good car to drive. A bit of a squish in the back with 3 children (1 booster, 1 car seat) and the rear seatbelts are fiddly too. The extra seats in the boot fold up but not out of the way completely (the Toyota does I think) and as a result the boot is much smaller. The seats are really only suitable for children as the leg room is very restricted. We only have ours in the car if we have children for tea or are ferrying children for school stuff! With the seats in you can only just fit a buggy in the boot.

The panoramic roof is fabulous - the extra light makes a huge difference and the children love it.

Climate control is reasonable but a little noisy.

We've got the diesel 2L and it's extremely economical.

Can't think of anything else - generally v. pleased with it though.

unicorn · 18/09/2004 21:20

Relly interesting yoyo.. thanks for that... was it a new car?

Maybe the 307 estate may be enough for us.. we don't really need the extra seats- just a nice option... (is the boot big enough when the extra seats AREN'T in use?)

Also until now we have been used to a 1.9 td citroen.. so anything less feels a bit... well sluggish... 2L diesel may be the answer

unicorn, what were you not keen about with the zafira? I've got one and although I have issues with the layout of the seats I find it a really nice drive and it goes really well. Mind you it's a 2.0 tdi, what did you try?

yoyo · 18/09/2004 21:31

Yes we bought it new. The boot is a reasonable size without the seats. We had a 306 estate before this one and the boot seemed bigger though. You can load it up pretty well and the 2nd row of seats can be altered to give you loads of space without children. If you visit a garage get them to show you all the combinations (if the salesperson knows how to do it). The middle seat in the back folds down to give a little table which is pretty good if you've only got 2 children. There are also flip-down trays on the backs of the front seats.

unicorn · 18/09/2004 21:31

testdrive was a 1.8.. petrol..
we're used to diesel, and I guess it just felt all wierd being high up etc..
Despite our recent nightmare on M6 (previous thread - re tyre blowout)our Citroen has served us well, (it's 10 yrs old.. zx..) always felt sturdy solid and powerful, the zafira seemed fine for well pootling about town, pick ups etc.. but as dh said.. if we had had a blow out at 70mph he wouldn't have felt so secure in it. (irrational but nevertheless, gut response, after previous nightmare experience)

OP posts:
JanH · 18/09/2004 21:34

Mind you the rear seats are the same as the Peugeot sounds - only suitable for very small (and nimble) people - and the remaining boot space also tiny.

JanH · 18/09/2004 21:37

hm - not sure I'm convinced I'd feel secure in anything with a 70mph blowout!

Do Honda do a 5/7 seater? Hondas in general seem to be very popular - Jazzes everywhere you turn!

jasper · 18/09/2004 22:27

DO NOT BUY A PEUGEOT 307!! At the risk of being sued, stay well clear!
Okay now I have calmed down I will put this into perspective!
Ours is a diesel 307 althought not the station wagon. The build quality is PURE PANTS.
We bought it brand new.
The garage had to replace it after a month because we drove to Newcastle and it would not restart. The AA could not fix it so it was towed 200 miles home and the garage could not fix it either. I hear it is still in pieces in the local garage, more than a year on.

The second one, its replacement , was no better.Bits of it literally started to drop off from day one.

The most worrying fault was that the electrics ( and therefor the engine) would sometimes completely cut off WHILE THE CAR WAS IN MOTION. Ie I might be driving at 70mph on the motorway with three kids in the back seat when the engine would cut out.

On the plus side, most of the too numerous to list faults were fixed in the first year ( it spent a LONG time in the garage)and it is now quite nice to drive and it is economical on fuel which is why we bought it in the first place.
However I still deeply mistrust it and would never go near Peugeot again.

My seven year old Toyota on the other hand has never given me a moment's bother. Have you considered the new Toyota 7 seaters? (Verso or something like that)

unicorn · 18/09/2004 22:40

blimey jasper!!!
I think that's the problem with new cars in general though... ie the "boys toys" electronics are just getting too silly... don't really need half of them.
Don't really need a massive car... fancy an estate, but the one's with the option of extra seats always looked appealing...
Then again looks aren't everything!!!!

ps jaspar- you should tell Jeremy what's his face.(y'know smarmy jeans (yak) pants)on BBC must be worth a warning and putting a rocket up Peugeot?

I love our Toyota, we've got an Avensis Estate, and recently looked at the Avensis Verso, haven't actually had a test drive yet - don't think we can afford brand new anyway.

Anyway, back to the point - Toyota's are definately worth looking at. Our estate has bags of space. With the new Avensis Verso all the rear seats slide back and forth individually so you can adjust the legroom, and they can all be removed. The other advantage of the Avensis Verso is that it has more headroom than the standard Avensis. We had an Escort Estate previously, no way would I go back now, and I thought the Escort was pretty good before we bought our Avensis.

Unicorn you have hit on one of my pet hates (granted, I have lots) namely the overcomplication of things nowadays. SO many electronic knobs and bells that can go wrong.

Watchdog did a piece on the Peugeot 307, basically saying it is a turkey. Yoyo has reminded me about the problem Watchdog highlighted about the milometer . Basically they are set wrong and record mileages as if you have travelled further than you have, ie your car ends up with more miles on the clock than it has actually done!

After about the tenth trip to get something else fixed at the garage the Peugeot dealer actually said that buying a brand new car was no guarantee it would work, but just a guarantee that they would fix everythig that went wrong in the first three years

remember to check out honest john's website for good and bad things in any car you are considering.

honest John is here

unicorn · 25/09/2004 12:57

just done a test drive of the Peugeot 307 sw..and (Jasper in partic) I'm afraid we really liked it.
Allatsea...
the 2 extra seats don't fold flat (and are an additional expenditure)
but it felt a nice drive, and nice and roomy too.

Does anyone know about the passport payment scheme that Peugeot do? (a sort of leasing idea)

Any other thoughts on Peugeot?

very obvious bump!!
anyone got any thoughts on peugeot 307?

OP posts:
jasper · 25/09/2004 23:51

unicorn we LOVED ours when we took it for a test drive.I still think it is a great looking car.(ours is metalic black)It's just that it developed lots of minor, and a few serious faults straight away.

But I think it is the Dyson of the car world! Very impressive to start off with but nothing but trouble when you get it home and bits keep dropping off.

Maybe ours is just a duff model, or rather BOTH of ours - the one we still have and the first one we got that had to be replaced after only a few weeks!

If you decide to go for it I do hope you have a different experience from us.
Best of luck.

jasper · 25/09/2004 23:55

Did you check out Honest John's website?
The total power failure our car had is a recognised fault in the peugeot 307. I strongly suggest you ask the car dealer if Peugeot have fixed this fault and don't be satisfied with any flannel.

nicm · 27/09/2004 19:19

Hi

I would not buy another peugeot. i had a 206 with loads of problems, and when the car was in the garage getting fixed which was on average once a month for the 20 months i kept it. i always got a 307 as a courtesy car and the problems with them were just as bad. the back door stuck on one side and would not open, the speedometer would not work, the indicators would not stay on and that was only on the courtesy cars. have changed to a grand scenic and love it, and the two seats in the boot fold into the floor and also it had 5 stars for safety. i have the 1.5dci 100.

i wouldn't ever buy a peugeot again.

hth sorry to go on

unicorn · 27/09/2004 19:40

oh dear..you are putting me off now..and it looks so nice as well.
nicm, Is the grand scenic a renault?

OP posts:
yoyo · 27/09/2004 20:15

We bought ours even though we'd read up on all the potential faults, in particular the electrics. I'm not sure that it is also a problem with the SW though. We had only one hiccup with the electrics and that was that the wing mirrors didn't open on a couple of occasions. The oil gauge was also a bit dodgy but since having the download for the milo things seem to be okay. They did a 4 year interest free and gave us a good deal on our 306 which swung it for us in the end.
Check out a number of dealers in your area - we've had problems with our nearest one but when we lived elsewhere had very good service. When you visit the showroom go on a day when the service area is open as you could ask people waiting what they thought of the place. They vary ENORMOUSLY.

nicm · 28/09/2004 19:48

hi unicorn

yes the grand scenic is a renault. i think they were only launched in spring. there is loads of space and storage compartments, also the driving is really nice as you are higher up and get a better view. the kids also like it, as they can see over the hedges and not just the kurb!!

i also had problems with my oil level indicators like yoyo on the 206 and they have tried the downloads which they claim to have updated on numerous occassions and they now say they cannot fix the problems. on one occassion the 'fried' the on board computer when trying to install the new doownload and i was left with the courtesy car for over a week while they were waiting on the new computer.

sorry to be so negative but i wouldn't want anyone else to have the same problems i did. i also spoke to the mechanic and he said he would not buy a peugeot as there were so many people with these problems and that he drove a rover!!
