There's threads on Cuisenaire rods, and LIZS helped me find a beautiful set of Playplax, which has been played and played with.

Now, can anyone help me identify (and maybe find) a game from the 60s that involved assembling beetles, or ladybirds, or something insecty anyway. The insects were made of thick cardboard, in bits, a thorax, a head, feelers or something, etc., and you had (probably) to throw a dice to see which bit you'd got next - kind of a happy families game. Each insect was a different gorgeous pattern - green and black tiny stripes, black and red spots, and so on.

I expect it was Galt, but they don't have an archive website.

We have the modern version of that game - it is now called Build a Beetle and is by Chad Valley. My son is mad about it. However, it is very plasticky and doesn't sound nearly as nice as yours.
Good luck finding it!

Hmm, sounds like a cross between Beetle and Flounders!

Do you mean a 3D beetle, binkie? We had a game which made a jigsaw beetle, I think. But my boys also had an old 2nd hand game which made 3D dinosaurs. It was very popular, and eventually fell to pieces!

There's an old game called Beetle on ebay here but the beetles look plain.
