Wireless music?

I want to be able to listen to music in every room. I don't want to carry CDs around. I don't want to use CDs at all, really.

I know there are systems out there to do this. Has anyone tried one? Do they work with iTunes?

We've got the Philips wireless centre. You have one main station with a harddrive that you just upload all your CDs on. And then you have one (or more) smaller stations that you place in other rooms. The connection to the main centre is wifi. I think the main centre comes with one extra station so we have one downstairs and one upstairs. Never saw the need to buy additional stations. My Dh and I love it!

Ah, great, that seemed like the most obvious one. Can you just copy music from iTunes to it? We have already ripped most of our CDs into iTunes ...

Arse, looks like it doesn't take iTunes format ...

we have wireless speakers that pick up from a little transmitter thing attached to the stereo in the living room - v cost-effective but not fabulous quality.

you can plug the transmitter into anything with a line out so it'll probably work from the PC...

Hmmm, but I don't want to have to go back to the PC every time I want to change tracks. And I would like to have one music in the kitchen and another in the living room, but from the same system, iyswim.

Maybe the solution is ipods and docking stations everywhere. The Panasonic thing looks good, but I am not up for re-ripping everything!

oh different music in every room, eh?

will consult dh

NotQuiteCockney · 27/07/2007 11:24

I think I'd like the option. And controls in each room for that room's music, iyswim.

The Phillips one looks like the only one, but I don't want to re-rip everything. My (sony) phone takes iTunes music, why wouldn't a music system?

depends what you've ripped it to iTunes in - if it's ripped as mp3 it should be ok though you may lose your custom playlists, but if it's mp4a you might get stuck.

(I did this with the first few albums I ripped in iTunes and found they wouldn;t go onto my cheapy mp3 player)

NotQuiteCockney · 27/07/2007 12:46

I don't think it's an mp3 format, it's something else. Default itunes format.

We can probably get them converted, somehow ...

if they're all mp4a (iTunes default) you may have to rip them all again to play on anything except iTunes-running stuff.

I strongly recommend doing any future ripping to mp3 - the quality isn't quite as good but the portability is worth it.

My Sony phone takes iTunes format (ok, granted, that's why I bought it, but still!) - I'd be surprised if there's nothing taking iTunes style stuff ...

The Philips will not take itunes format but does take MP3 format and a few others so you'll need to convert your music. Thankfully I had a MP3 player from Sony with all songs in MP3 format so the Philips automatically put all my music on the centre

NotQuiteCockney · 29/08/2007 12:24

Bumping in case anyone else has suggestions for this? I still want one ...
