Pulling out of my driveway and can't see

Trying to pull out of my driveway is hell. There is a big trailer truck that the neighbours have parked and every time I reverse out it obscures my view. Today I nearly crashed into a car that I think was speeding down because it wasn't there when I had first looked and it beeped at me so loudly.... It scared the life out of me.I've tried reverse parking in but it doesn't work because my road is so narrow and I usually holds up all of the traffic.I need everyone's advice because I'm now thinking of buying a very cheap car and parking it on the kerb so that the trailer truck cannot park there and I don't mind paying a little bit of insurance and MOT. Has anyone done this before? I'm just thinking it would be way cheaper than to have my kerb dropped and extended. What do you will think any advice and any experience would be much appreciated.

Reverse in, drive out.

EskewedBeef · 17/06/2019 17:22

Exactly as above. Do yourself a favour and pull out forwards.

SaveKevin · 17/06/2019 17:24

Yep hold up traffic and reverse in. It’s shit but it’s better then causing an accident reversing out.

justbeniceplease · 17/06/2019 17:26

You are thinking about buying another car rather than reversing into your drive?

Sorry that's way OTT.

If the road allows you to drive in and reverse out, it allows you to do the opposite.

Beebumble2 · 18/06/2019 11:19

Is the Kirby not already dropped at the end of your drive?
We have a similarly difficult drive opening to a sometimes busy road, but have enough space to drive in and then turn the car round to drive out. Admittedly, I sometimes need to do a 5 point turn.

Is there no way you can give yourself turning space?

SunshineSpring · 18/06/2019 11:50

Hold up the traffic and reverse in.

xyzandabc · 18/06/2019 11:52

Reverse in and is there anyway you could put a mirror on the other side of the road to allow you to see down the road?

WhiteLightTrainWreck · 18/06/2019 11:55

I know you said you don't want to hold up traffic, but it's much safer to make people wait a few minutes while you park rather than have someone take out your back end when you reverse out and you be totally at fault for it.

Jemima232 · 18/06/2019 11:56

FFS - you're thinking of buying another car to stop the truck parking on your preferred but of pavement?

Pay for some driving lessons so that you can learn to reverse in.

LoafofSellotape · 18/06/2019 11:58

What? Confused just reverse in,people can wait!

Gizlotsmum · 18/06/2019 12:13

Do you have a dropped kerb? If not then it's not really a drive is it?

PeaBea · 18/06/2019 12:15

Nicely explain to the neighbours that their trailer is a hazard and ask them to park it somewhere else?

luckygreeneyes · 18/06/2019 12:15
  1. If kerb isn’t dropped it isn’t a driveway
  2. Always reverse in and drive out wherever possible
LoafofSellotape · 18/06/2019 12:16

Do you have a dropped kerb? If not then it's not really a drive is it? What would you call it then?

anothercuppaforme · 18/06/2019 12:19

Reversing in is the only practical solution here. With respect, buying a second car just to block the pavement is complete madness!

Practice reversing your car into a parking bay every time the opportunity presents itself, so that you become more confident.

When approaching your drive and if there’s lots of traffic and you don’t want to reverse in, resist the temptation to just drive in forward - pull up at the side while traffic passes, if practical, or drive round again.

I’ve had to do something similar as with limited driving experience we moved into a house on a main road and parallel parking while holding up traffic is the norm. With practice, you get more confident and don’t worry so much about holding up traffic.

Also, you could try telling your neighbour that the trailer obscures your view - he might be able to park it somewhere else??

Gizlotsmum · 18/06/2019 12:20

A garden? Even if made into a paved drive way. If it doesn't have a dropped kerb I believe it isn't recognised as a driveway and people could legally park at the end of it, the dropped kerb is what gives you right of access

Mymadlife · 18/06/2019 14:23

Thank you.....that's great advice 👌

Reverse in! You're holding up the traffic and risking an accident by reversing out, so I don't know why you think that's any better Confused

LoafofSellotape · 18/06/2019 14:30

OP,why don't you just park at the end of your drive on the road if you haven't got a dropped kerb?

LoafofSellotape · 18/06/2019 14:35

If the keen isn't dropped are you actually allowed to drive over the pavement to your 'drive?'

LoafofSellotape · 18/06/2019 14:47

** kerb

Hoppinggreen · 18/06/2019 14:51

If your kerb isn’t dropped it’s actually a paved garden and you shouldn’t be either driving or reversing in or out of it. You need to park on the road if you dont have a drive
