Probably been done to death but anyway - sling for a big baby?

My dd is 4 months and adores her baby bjorn - loves being in the outward facing position. However, she is now 17lbs and I am going to do myself a mischief if we carry on using this back-torturing device much longer. Can someone recommend a good carrier for a big little baby, preferably with a similar carrying position to the bjorn? Thank-you!

Try a wrap sling like the Kari-me / Moby Wrap / Hug-a-bub - good selection here.
Or there's the Ergo which is a bit more technical, or the Wilkinet which is somewhere between the two.

can i recommend a Mei Tai? here or here Kozy, Ellaroo and Babyhawks are v. popular. they are also simpler to put on than a Babybjorn, more comfortable for long periods of time and last longer (to toddlerhood) In addition, they allow babies to hold their legs in a more natural and ergonomic position (frog legged).

Babybjorn lets a baby hang by the pelvic floor (crotch) muscles so is not an ergonomically sound carrier in which to carry a small baby. also, when a baby is carried facing outwards, they cannot turn away from stimulus when they need or want to. eg, bright sunlight or when tired and just want to cuddle in face first.

i am also a big fan of didymos wrap slings. here very good site to browse for general info on using a wrap sling. the new slings come with a dvd these days.

Sorry to hijack!

I'm looking to get a didymos sling MN review gives a price of £33.80 is this an error they seem to be at least double that!

kittywits · 27/07/2007 20:52

ergo or tricotti I'd say

gillhowe · 27/07/2007 20:54

tricotti is excellent IMO, very comfy and very easy to use.

puppydavies · 27/07/2007 21:05

stretchy slings like tricotti not hugely supportive for heavier babies. not sure ergo can even be used outward facing - body's too wide surely? for outward facing i'd suggest a wilkinet.

my ds2 is 3 months and already over 15lbs, I carry him regularly in my Mei Tai for hours without it getting uncomfortable

gillhowe · 27/07/2007 21:13

DS is 21 pounds and tricotti does stretch quite quickly thinking about it (then its annoying as it slips off)

puppydavies · 27/07/2007 21:15

actually i'd agree a mei tai's a pretty good bet. you can tuck the feet up in front buddha style if the (sling) body's big enough, and then you have great longevity - can be used on the back to 3+

kittywits · 27/07/2007 22:24

I wear my three month old in the Ergo on my back.

kiskidee · 28/07/2007 01:38

yes, didymos are expensive around £60. They are worth it, in the babywearing world and have excellent second hand value.

storchenweige and hoppediz are a bit cheaper, similar in quality and just as well loved but have a smaller range of choice.

....waiting for JoMa to add a pic of baby in Mei Tai on her profile page....

JoMa · 29/07/2007 23:57

I will, when I can get ds1 to take a pic that has me in shot

plus, it's lime green, so I need to wait for a sunny day to ensure you all have your sunglasses on ready
