We had the choice of these cars (as we bought tax free) and we went for the SAAB (96 convertible) simply because as standard spec you get alot more.

Having said that before we go home DH will be buying himself a car (the SAAB was for me ) and he will be buying a Volvo (estate type family car). That's my opinion anyway

AbRoller · 22/07/2007 19:29

Audi A4 Quattro

McDreamy · 22/07/2007 19:33

SAAB 93

lapsedrunner · 22/07/2007 19:33

Volvo, Volvo, Volvo (espcially V70 T5), love it to bits.

MuffinMclay · 22/07/2007 19:35

Agree about the Audi. I hate mine (A6 estate) - endless problems and expense that we don't have with our other car (and haven't had with any past cars). We'll keep it until it comes to the end of its life because we need the huge boot space (big pushchair and up to 3 dogs), but I wouldn't get another one.

Wouldn't get a BMW either - wanky (but so are Audis, IMO)

AbRoller · 22/07/2007 19:35

oh McDreamy that is a fab car, I may change my mind about the Audi

McDreamy · 22/07/2007 19:36

It is a fab car - fun to drive not boring at all!

daisybo · 22/07/2007 19:46

saab everytime, but i don't like german cars!

inamuckingfuddle · 22/07/2007 20:15

used to have a saab, loved it, gorgeous, powerful and sadly cost a fortune to run I have just got a new BMW 1 series which I never thought I would, can't stand BMW drivers but it is lovely, tis the facelift version, new this spring and I can't fault it...

milge · 22/07/2007 20:36

to answer your question with a list:
Saab
Volvo
Merc
BMW

I currently drive a 2yo Saab 93 conv - it is our 3rd, and surprisingly spacious. The facelift model is dramatically better than the pre 2004 model. You get a saab practically fully loaded for list price, unlike:
We previously had a Merc Estate, which was like driving a small african nation, but great for carrying loads, and a dream in town/on motorway. I believe the current model has lots of problems. The main problem with this and BMWs, is the car has a list price, but you need to spend a further £10-15K on speccing it up. If you are going to go for a merc, always, always, always, get an automatic. Manuals have poorer resale value.

volvo speaks for itself, - safe, quality, but just so volvo - ish. The XC90 is an honourable execption, but put off by poor emissions and mpg ( and parking/congestion charge hike that goes with that)

BMW - The 320d Touring is ok, as is the current m5. Not really my scene otherwise.

katiebell100 · 22/07/2007 20:44

DH has a saab 9-3 estate and it's great never had one before, but great to drive and it looks nice. Also looked at the 3 series, but it was tiny, the kids were almost next to each other on the back seat. I drive an A-class and it is very expensive to service, £440

bozza · 22/07/2007 20:47

Volvo has best safety credentials - both for passengers and pedestrians.

Hulababy · 22/07/2007 21:53

I'd say it depends what tpye of car you are going for - the models - not just the make. Different makes do better at different styles of cars.

Oh, and we loved our Audi. Was fantastic and gave us no trouble at all. One of best cars we have owened. Was the Audi A4 cabriolet, lovely

FIL works for Volvo garage, and has had many Volvos in past. Very reliable, good quality cars. Not very sexy though!
