Doea anyone know how long you can use a travel cot for... does it go on the childs weight/age/length or something else. None of the websites/catalogues I've looked in mention it and I'd like to know before we splash out on one. OUr DS is nearly 1 so is it worth it?
thanks LW

I would say probably not, I have a small 2 year old and she has hated being in the travel cot for the best part of the last year. They are quite a bit smaller and seem to be more enclosed than a standard cot. Saying that we have a cot bed so they are quite a bit bigger than a normal cot so that may be the reason why she hated it so much.

we've got a great baby bjorn one which is actually even longer than her real cot. she's 2.10 months and still has loads of room in it
there are some smaller ones that are almost square. i'd avoid these if you want longevity

You can buy big travel cots and little travel cots. If you get a big one it'll be worth doing perhaps althgouh depends obviously on how many times you think you'll use it.
We got a great Mamas and Paps one in the sale. because it was last seasons colour it was about 40% off! Poor DS, having to sleep in last seasons colours - Will he ever forgive me??

I've got a tall 2 year old and we've only just stopped using our travel cot as she is 'top-to-toe' in it, IYSWIM. We got quite a lot of use out of ours though as my Mum lives a 2 hour drive away from us so we tend to stay over for visits. Plus the fact that we used to take it with us whenever we went to friends houses for the evening, so that DD could settle. If you do honestly think you'll get some decent use out of it, then I would say 'buy one'. The longer ones do sound good though.

Ours has a weight limit - 13kg IIRC. I don't know if they all specify a limit though. Ours is quite a heavy weight one.

mckenzie, our ds will probably be similarly scarred, having been pushed around in a Maclaren buggy from kiddicare, in the sale because it was the previous season's model. What's worse is that I intend to use the same buggy for ds 2 when he arrives...it'll be 4 years out of date, oh horror!

littleweed · 13/09/2004 19:24

cheers girls - sounds like a long one in last seasons colours is the way ahead - at least he'll only be in it at night so it'll be too dark to see what colour it is!!

Littleweed,
I have two travel cots. One is permanently at PILs and we needed another for my parents and for us when we stay over at friends.

I didn't want to spend the money on a new one (skin flint!!) as I didn't want to buy the cheaper square type, so I looked on eBay. I found that it was cheaper and more convenient to buy one out of the local paper. It was only £25 and looks new, and I got to see it and play with it before I handed over the cash.

Just in case your a miser like me!!

Littleweed,

As a bed we could be using ours still for dd, cos she is so small, except for the fact that she could vault out by 20 months !

Poor thing must be sooo traumatised - she is still (occasionally) using ds' Maclaren buggy which is 6 years old and his 5 yo Freeway Excel car seat - how passe is that ! Actually sod that, I save loads on buying branded clothes at the end of one season for the following year!! Do you think anyone notices it is last year's Mexx ?

Blackduck · 14/09/2004 09:49

well ds is being pushed around in a Maclaren stroller which has to be at least 8 years old (and is on its fourth child.....) At least I never worry about those baggage handlers losing it, or dropping it.....

Gingerbear · 14/09/2004 09:52

Kiddicare often have bargains for travel cots (thats where we got ours from)
