anyone used a bath chair for their baby?

I asked in Mothercare today to see if they stocked the one in their catalogue with the suction cups on the bottom. They said that this product has recently been recalled but didn't know why. There is similar in the Vertbaudet catalogue and I was thinking of getting this one. Are they any good? Does anyone know why the Mothercare ones were recalled?

I thought it would be great for DS (age 3) and DD (3 months) to bath together using this.

Not sure which type oyu mean - the rounded ones where baby had to be able to sit up on their own to use, or the reclining support chairs for use from birth? Can't find it on their website.

sparkle · 11/09/2004 21:55

It's the rounded one which sits them upright. The Vertbaudet one has a couple of toys on the front bar. Perhaps the Mothercare one was taken off the website as it was recalled but is still in their catalogue.

No idea why it has been recalled - can the staff in Mothercare not tell you? Or try e-mailing Mothercare themselves.

We had a Mothercare one once DD was sitting up on her own and it was just fine. So not sure why???

A child who had been sitting in one of these drowned in bath about 18m ago or so. It was round here (Southampton) they had bought theirs from Argos who recalled them at the time. Having saaid that, if you are watching your child in the bath all the time then this shouldn't happen. We used one for DS1 but he didn't like it much. Used it more for DS2 (as in bath with DS1!) and he was fine. I could see how it may topple though if you weren't on hand all the time but surely no-one would leave their baby in one and leace the room would they...?

I got one before I needed it because it had a specials price, but forgot about it and never used it, now DS is too big for it. If you want it CAT me. It's not from Mothercare and it's still in its box

OldieMum · 11/09/2004 23:16

I used one once, loaned by a friend for me to try. DD's legs got stuck in it. It seemed both pointless and something that could cause her a lot of discomfort.

Davros · 12/09/2004 19:19

Yes, had tomy one for DS (now 9) and have just used it for DD (now 18 mos). Still need to supervise of course but found it invaluable, just to be able to reach out to get towel etc (never mind popping into bedroom to check cricket score!). Haven't used it for last few months.

blossomhill · 12/09/2004 19:21

Yes I used one for dd and found it really helpful. Obviously you have to watch then but leaves your hands free to wash them!

MummyToSteven · 12/09/2004 19:23

i use a bath support rather than a bath chair (DS too small/not sitting up enough) for a bath chair, and find it fab (particularly as until about 2 weeks ago DS hated baths and would be kicking and screaming through them). Would agree that I wouldn't leave a baby in the bath in one. Just useful to have free hands and a supported baby

LIZS · 12/09/2004 19:46

We had the blue circular one (First Years or Safety First ?) which had suction pads on and beads in front, for dd. Got it second hand but was as new. Used it for dd in bath with ds until about 6 months ago - she's 3 now - and she got wedged in ! It was great for demarking her area when she was smaller.

Seabird · 12/09/2004 19:52

I had one or dd but found she kept slipping down so the plastic bit was uncomfortably between her legs.

Helgand · 12/09/2004 22:21

Borrowed one from a friend when we stayed with relatives as they have a sunken bath which makes supporting your baby REALLY difficult! Have just bought one from a car boot sale today for a bargain £1.00. We don't use it all the time as bathtime is normally DH's domain but I always use it when I'm running the show as it's so uncomfortable hanging over the side of the bath. However, I never take my eyes off DD (8 mths)even when reaching for towel.

Angeliz · 12/09/2004 23:05

My dd's thighs used to always get wedged in and it was really difficlut to get her out without scratching her legs!

(She had lovely squidgy thighsmmmmmmmmmmmm)

Ghosty · 12/09/2004 23:14

We have one, used it for DS until he was crawling (I think) at 10 mths. DD (7 months) is using it now (it is the Safety 1st one like LIZS) ... invaluable piece of equipment IMO ... DD loves it and is in it every day ...
Agree with Tommy in that who would leave a baby in a bath unattended even if they were in a seat?
If we didn't have one then DD would never have a bath (at 10.5 kg she is no light weight!)

Distracted · 13/09/2004 10:15

I used something similar for my dd - perhaps more like a bath 'support'. It has a wire frame and cloth seat that fits over it (can take the cloth off and wash it). Not something that they could get wedged in. Probably cheaper and used it I think until she could sit up herself (hard to remember now as seems so long ago - dd is 2 1/2, but about to use it again for next baby due soon). I never got on with the baby bath and this meant that I could let go of her in the bath as she was supported, but obviously would never have left her at all.

smellymelly · 13/09/2004 10:25

I think it the Tomy one that, the front collaspes down for getting them out, much better than scratching their legs on the blue ones. Also folds flat for travel etc. Not sure if they still do them I got mine 2nd hand.

I'm not sure 3 months is a little young though as they still need to be able sit up, although not supporting themselves. I left it till about 5 months.

Distracted · 13/09/2004 10:33

Found a link to the one I used, it's called a towelling baby bather: towelling baby bather

It's not a proper seat like the other ones people are recommending, more of a support, but can be used from birth and I did find it really useful.

aloha · 13/09/2004 11:03

I had a plastic one and found it invaluable for preventing backache and giving me a free hand. Dh never used it, but I loved it.

bonniej · 13/09/2004 11:12

I use one of these for dd. Tried to stop using it now as she's 15mnths so a bit old for it but without it she just keeps standing up and trying to get out of the bath, and slipping as the non slip bathmat only covers so much area. I got it back out of the cupboard and we have lovely bathtimes again. It's the blue round one with coloured beads on the front. She has never got stuck in it and I would never leave her in it on her own not even for a minute. It clearly says on the seat to keep baby at arms reach all the time.
