Fitting a LCD tv to the wall!!

sparklygothkat · 07/07/2007 20:12

We have a 37" tv, and currently its on a unit, but the kids keep pulling on it, and I have visions of it falling. I would like to fit it to the wall, but don't know if I have to buy the same make as the telly or if I can buy one off ebay. Also we are in a new build so will the walls take the weight??
TIA

I know, We brought it last year, but I am not on here moaning about debts etc, so I don't care.

you need to fit it corrently into a stud i think its called. might be worth asking someone professional to do it.

sparklygothkat · 07/07/2007 20:19

It depends on the wall, if the wall is a load bearing one it will be fine. Not so sure about others.

PinkChick · 07/07/2007 20:20

no chick, i meant 'some' posters will think its not the done thing to have a fab big telly on your wall!, me, im green with envy..glad you're getting setteld into the house(i was Evesmama)

sparklygothkat · 07/07/2007 20:23

Oh its fab here PinkChick, everyone is nice.
Thw wall is where the stairs are on the other side, does that make it load bearing?? I have no idea about houses and how they are made lol

hmm, its prob not load bearing?, give it a knock...does it sounds holow???, if so, it will prob need some kind of special reinforcment or a company to install it sturdilly?

sparklygothkat · 07/07/2007 20:26

I have to say, that my brother has a even bigger tv!! Its huge!! I walked into his bedroom and nearly died at the sight of it!! It takes up most of one wall.. Actually I can't remember what size mine is, might be 35" oh well, its not as big as DB..

a stud is like the skeleton of the house. think of it like beams in a ceiling. weight needs to be attached to the stud, not just what be nothing more than plaster board.

sparklygothkat · 07/07/2007 20:33

thanks RN. I will ask my dad to look at it, I know some of the walls are just plasterboard, and just trying to put up a picture is a nightmare.

I'm not sure cause I think it depends on the weight but you might be better off with a stud wall. When we looked at doing this, the guy in the shop said that to look really good, you need to think about cutting a channel for the wires from the TV down to plug otherwise you get this brill TV on walll and lots of ugly wires straggling down from it. With a stud wall, guess you could hide these behind it??

Nemo2007 · 08/07/2007 15:19

We have a 28" tv on a wall bracket which is great. I will point hubby in direction of this thread when he comes home as he is the man in the know!!

Nemo2007 · 08/07/2007 15:20

oh and as for wires you can box them in without channelling them, ours are boxed and to be honest you dont notice the box.

HappyMummyOfOne · 09/07/2007 09:05

As long as the wall is an external one, it should be fine. Make sure the screws are really long (so they go through the plasterboard and a good depth into the brick) and that you get the correct mount. It doesnt have to be the manufacturers one as long as its the same VESA size. Look for reviews on the mount and see what other people have said about it, be careful as some cheap imports on ebay and not as strong or made as well.

Check your instruction booklet as some dont recommend you hang near a heat source.

As for the wires, you can get a piece of trunking for about £6 from a diy store, at least then if you want to add a console or switch to a new dvd player etc you can easily do it. If you paint the trunking the same colour as the wall you wont hardly see it as its very thin.
