Moltex eco-friendly disposables

I've seen these advertised in a mail-order catalogue and wondered if anyone had ever used them here (I think they are German and not available in supermarkets etc in the UK). They certainly seem more eco-friendly but the blurb would say that, I guess...all comments appreciated.

I've been using Tushies and they are a bit leaky, so ordered some Moltex not realising they have gel in. I will use them for now but might go back to Tushies. Anyway, the Moltex hadn't come so I bought some Nature Boy& girl for a few days, and this morning dd had what looked like crystals of plasticky stuff on her bottom. Is this gel, and if so what is it doing in Nature nappies?

Ellaroo · 23/08/2002 20:24

Yes, that's the gel. I think the nature nappies only claim to be environmentally friendly - not child friendly!

Philippat · 23/08/2002 20:45

Crept into dd's room trying not to wake her to investigate what Nature nappies say...

Web site (www.naty.se) is full of pictures of healthy-looking swedish babies. It says it uses 50% of the amount of 'superabsorbants' (I assume this is the gel) of normal disposables. This appears to be the only non-biodegradable element.

Incidentally, Ellaroo, I have to wear breathing apparatus when I clean a painting at work (art gallery) but I wouldn't consider going to a gallery dangerous with my baby!

I am not impressed at all. The main reason I changed from Tushies is because they are bleached but now will change back. As for Nature nappies...Pah!

jenny2998 · 24/08/2002 21:02

Aloha, have only read bits and peices here, but surely regarding the 'heating' issue the difference is that washable nappies are breathable and disposables aren't. Cotton is obviously more breathable than plastic, and the nappies I use are specifically breathable ones.

Anyone live in SE London? There's a chemist that sells Moltex nappies in Herne Hill called Fourways Pharmacy. All the kids round here wear them. Why not tie in a trip to the delightful Brockwell Park with a stock up on nappies?
I did try the reusable nappies but found the leaks and constant cycle of changing, washing and drying too much. And then a German friend told me that Moltex got a "sehr gut" (very good) rating from a hardcore green magazine called OKO, which doesn't give their "sehr gut"s lightly. And they're not horrendously expensive either - £9.99 for 54 nappies (lasts me about 2-3 weeks). They are far more absorbent than any other disposables that I've had to buy in emergencies and they don't smell of wee after an hour either. They are also a million times better than those crapulous 'green' ones from Sainsbury's too. Love them!

cha, i'm really near brockwell park on the brixton side. not relevant to the thread but like to identify the locals! for the record i'm using nature boy & girl but am very keen to go the reusable route next time.

Cha · 31/08/2002 15:01

Hi bossykate - yes, knew you were from round these parts, followed a discussion a while back! The park's great for a walk, feed the ducks, play on the swings or get in the paddling pool (if we get any more nice weather, that is)and it's only across the road to get yourself some Moltex. Although they sound like some kind of incendiary device, they are miles better than Nature Boy / Girl (both for the environment and your pocket, being more absorbent). Fourways is a great pharmacy too (won Chemist's of the Year in Mother & Baby or something) and has lots of organic baby food and the pharmacist knows quite a lot about herbal remedies too. It's on the same side of the road as the Half Moon pub and has Moltex nappies in the window for all to see.

aloha · 31/08/2002 21:00

Jenny, the thing is, they only tested the babies with the reusable nappies on, but not with the plastic wraps. As I understand it, everyone who uses resuables also uses the plastic wraps, so it wasn't a fair or scientific comparison. Also, it's only the outside of the disposables that has a thin coating, and it seems to me that the hefty plastic wrap would be even less 'breathable' than a plastic coated disposable.

By the way, I love Brockwell Park (I'm in Camberwell)!

cha, thanks for the info. we live more or less half way between brockwell park and clapham common and have been taking ds to clapham most of the time recently - high time we went to brockwell park again, i really like it. and will check out fourways at the same time. which also reminds me, went swimming at the lido last year having passed my due date. lots of very sweet kids were asking me when he was due and i got great satisfaction from saying "last tuesday!" and seeing their shocked faces! bless.

do (did lol!) you ever go to three monkeys indian restaurant? it was one of my (rather numerous) condemned woman's last meals out before the arrival of ds.

btw - was it you who was asking for info on holidays in croatia a while back? if so, how did it go?

soon we will have enough people for a clapham, brixton, peckham, camberwell, dulwich mini meet!

Small world! I thought this was multi national, not just Saaf Londoners. What a chat about a nappy can do for your weblife... Bossykate - didn't go to Croatia in the end, (got a brochure and was put off by the concrete hotels) but had a lovely two weeks in Italy instead. As for the 3 Monkeys - went there once and had a meal that we could have got from a takeaway for a fraction of the price and haven't been since. Lombok Thai restaurant is where I went when trying to shift the child, didn't work, still was 12 days overdue, but the food's the best Thai I've had in London - try it (opposite Fourways, which is, of course, the centre of my universe)
